What is the Purpose of Art?
In an earlier edition of the Ethnic Worship & Arts Focus newsletter
(article: God is an Artist - Jan99), we saw a very helpful picture of
God the Artist!
Another passage which is very helpful in further understanding God and
His purposes as an artist is Romans 1:18ff, which says: …”The wrath
of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and
wickedness of men who SUPPRESSED the truth by their wickedness, since
WHAT MAY BE KNOWN ABOUT GOD (seen & EXPERIENCED through HIS ART)
is PLAIN (EVIDENT) to them, because God has MADE IT PLAIN to them (He’s
REVEALED HIS CHARACTER TO THEM THROUGH HIS ART). For SINCE THE CREATION
OF THE WORLD GOD'S INVISIBLE QUALITIES - His eternal power and divine
nature - HAVE BEEN CLEARLY SEEN......BEING UNDERSTOOD...from what has
been made (THROUGH HIS HANDIWORK! - art)......SO THAT MEN ARE WITHOUT
EXCUSE.
Wow!! IF, then, He expresses His eternal power and divine nature through
HIS ART to the extent that mankind UNDERSTANDS His divine qualities
from what He has made, SO THAT THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE (and then choose
to move towards God or SUPPRESS THE TRUTH), does it not make sense that
He would also want to use art (which HE created) in His Church, to express
to the lost and hurting world His other qualities, as well? Does it
not make sense that He would continue to reveal Himself to us in various
ways through His artistic Creation? He is CREATIVE - He has made us
to be CREATIVE -- why? To enable us to give expression to the inspiration
He creates within us to declare and proclaim His glorious character,
which in turn will be a beacon to those around us, drawing them beyond
sounds, music, color, images, etc. into His Light and Life as well.
God has chosen to use art in various forms to communicate with us at
deep levels…through His Creation, through songs, poems, metaphors, stories,
parables, etc. His whole Bible is a form of art.
If God affirms the important role of art by making generous use of it
and even expressing His character through it, let us be encouraged that
He wants to fill us with His Spirit so that we, too, can learn to create
works that will also express His character and draw those who are touched
by His art, which He’s used us to create, to be drawn to Him and to
worship Him in increasing measure.
We see in Rom 1:23 that art is being used and robbed by Satan to gain
worship for himself instead of bringing praise and worship to God. But
the Lord's prayer says "YOUR KINGDOM COME. YOUR WILL BE DONE ON EARTH
AS IT IS IN HEAVEN!!" What is God’s will concerning the arts? Is it
His original intention that we worship Him through the use of music
and the arts and that we proclaim His greatness through them?
Let those of us who are called by God to be artists and musicians be
ENCOURAGED that we ARE a VITAL part of His plans to see the Gospel of
the Kingdom preached in the WHOLE WORLD as a TESTIMONY (art & music
IS by it's very nature a TESTIMONY of some kind) to ALL NATIONS, and
THEN the end shall come.

Following is an excerpt to give you a bit of an idea of the article:
“…The world these days is changing at light speed velocity-and we mission
and ministry leaders stand responsible, especially given the speed of
change these days, to give special attention to the task of 'working
together to see what God is doing to shape ministry that will bear Kingdom
fruit in this rapidly shifting new millennium.'[1]
And in the midst of giving this special attention, I find it a special
privilege in this paper to suggest to you two very important issues
related to world evangelization. First…God is affirming contextualized
worship as He releases His worshiping people and communities around
the world. Therefore these days we mission leaders need to even more
aggressively pursue contextualized worship as one of the high priority
goals on all our mission fields. And second, God is raising up a new
breed of missionary specialists, worship and arts ministry specialists
to help intentionally accelerate contextualized worship and evangelism
in His efforts to penetrate every tongue, tribe and people with His
Gospel. Therefore these days we mission and ministry leaders need to
even more aggressively pursue weaving this new breed of mission and
ministry specialists into the fabric of our other mission specialists
and strategies . . . as another high priority goal on all our mission
fields…”
