Coda Music (maker of Finale, Finale Allegro and PrintMusic) will
let you download a copy of NotePad ($19.95 value) for FREE. This
is a scaled-down notation software. It will allow you to input notes
with your mouse, transpose, put in one line of lyrics.... If you
don't currently use notation software, this could be a good starter
software. Or, download one to "give" your kids for
Christmas. If you want a CD-ROM with the software, I may be able
to get some. There will be a small fee for this (probably $5 which
includes shipping charges). To download the software, just click
on the link here.

MY TONGUE IS THE PEN: How Audiocassettes
Can Serve the Non-Reading World
- Marilyn Malmstrom
=====================================
This book emphasizes the importance of the integration of audio
activities into the overall strategy of literacy and language development.
It is designed to meet the growing need for documentation on the
why's and how's of audiocassette usage.
In many language groups, the illiteracy rates remain high, despite
yers of literacy efforts. The challenge comes in trying to find
ways and methods to provide teaching and training that will attract
and build up a community while encouraging further literacy. In
recent years, the need to include traditional and modern nonprint
media has become more evident. More and more people are using a
variety of nonprint media forms with a great deal of success. MY
TONGUE IS THE PEN makes available the principles needed to successfully
include an appropriate audiocassette program in a language program
strategy. The presentation allows for the kind of flexibility needed
to make the audio element in a program effective in a given language
community. ISBN: 0-88312-812-8 To order: SIL, International Academic
Bookstore, 7500 W. Camp Wisdom Road, Dallas, TX 75236
NOTE: There are also principles in this book which apply to the
development and utilization of various forms of media to reach the
unreached through music and the arts. There are millions of non-readers
who may not ever have the chance to become literate, but who are
able to relate to an appropriate presentation of the Gospel through
music and the arts.

SOFTWARE RESOURCES FOR WORSHIP MUSICIANS: - from the Global
Worship Report
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For worship leaders and musicians involved in western approaches
to arranging and writing music, there are two excellent tools at
reasonable prices that many will find useful. The first tool creates
"auto-arrangements" of music that can be played through the computer
sound card or midi system. The other program is a greatly simplified
version of Finale, the most successful software notation program
of all time. Both programs are under U$75.
Resource #1: BAND IN A BOX: (Excerpts from product reviews)
------------------------------------------
Creative computer music software applications are bordering on true
artificial intelligence. One of the most useful software application
of all time for musicians and music educators is Band-in-a-Box
by PG Music. The software can generate play-along accompaniments
in several musical styles and in any key and tempo in a matter of
seconds.. This versatile program can generate drum, bass and various
instrumental accompaniment styles, based on a chosen Style and your
choice of chords. It can also harmonize solo lines, or even improvise
solos.
You construct a Song by entering chords onto the Worksheet bar window.
The screen is pre-divided into bars and beats, so just put in the
chords at the correct bar. You then define the key, the tempo, and
a performance style. You then 'frame' the song by marking the beginning
and end of the chorus, and how many times to loop (repeat). There
are good basic score-printing facilities as well. Each part in the
arrangement can get printed. The program is an ideal teaching and
practicing tool. Musicians can study contemporary styles by muting
all parts and listening to drum or bass lines, or other instruments
of the various styles.
Worship musicians needing to make a quick backing track for a worship
song will find the program can save hours of arranging and sequencing
time. There are many built in styles that are suitable for worship
settings. Also, in response to many demands, a special styles disk
for praise and worship has just been released. (For more information,
contact PG Music ).

Resource #2: FINALE PRINT MUSIC: (From the PrintMusic press release)
---------------------------------------------------
Anyone wishing to create, play and print sheet music easily and
quickly for a low price now has one of the best products ever available
to get them started: Finale PrintMusic! for Windows from Coda Music
Technology. Based on Finale, the world's best-selling music notation
software, PrintMusic! for Windows provides an affordable way to
create quality sheet music just like the world's top publishers.
PrintMusic! for Windows is the easiest and most powerful entry-level
notation product on the market.
PrintMusic! is easy to learn, and it also has QuickStart video tips
that show first-time users all the basics right on the screen. While
it is easy to create music "from scratch", the program also comes
loaded with over 100 free music pieces to arrange and print as a
quick way to get started. It is also capable of helping users download
and print thousands of free MIDI files from the Internet.
Worship musicians needing to make quick "lead" sheets or easy praise
band arrangements will find the product very easy to use. Notation
programs provide a quick and excellent tool to not only create readable
music but also to instantly transpose your song into any key.

Hymnody"
by Brian Schrag, June 1997 - for more info contact Ethnomusicology
Dept., SIL, 7500 W. Camp Wisdom Rd., Dallas, TX 75326. To order:
ethnomusicology@sil.org
**Note: Catalyst A includes some thoughts on recording indigenous
hymnody.
It's a library of "Catalysts" - a library of short, structured papers,
each which describe a single activity -or Catalyst- that may be
used to encourage the use of indigenous hymnody in a given situation.
The library includes supporting materials to aid in the research
necessary to implement the Catalysts. It's a library of tools and
descriptions of activities that have worked.
Some basics - more details available if you contact above email
address:
1. Background Research. Analyze a situation in terms of elements
which are conducive, and elements which act as barriers, to Christian
musical creativity.
2. Choice. Choose existing-or create new-Catalysts to capitalize
on the strengths, and overcome the barriers of the specific situation.
3. Application. Apply the Catalyst in an effective, efficient, way
which will reduce the chance of negative side effects.
4. Review. Review results, checking for acceptance and integration,
and modify plan accordingly.

Heart Sounds International
-- Heart Sounds International
releasing worship among all peoples
Who we are:
-----------
Heart Sounds International (HSI) is a fellowship of trained worship
musicians and recording engineers committed to seeing God release
the "heart worship" of people groups and churches. We accomplish
this through
* Teaching in biblical principles of worship
* Training local musicians to apply their God-given compositional
abilities to write their own indigenous worship songs
* Recording local believers using state-of-the-art digital recording
equipment
* Installing recording facilities for local Christian musicians
to continue their own worship recording projects
Where we go:
------------
HSI teams work predominantly in the non-western world. We are particularly
committed to helping believers in the more restricted places of
Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
What we do:
-----------
HSI leadership form teams of worship musicians and recording engineers
to take 10-12 day "mission trips" to help in teaching, training,
recording or installing of facilities.
How we are funded:
-------------------
Each musician on the team donates his time, covers his/her own travel
costs and when possible contributes equipment to the projects. HSI
leadership seek donations of funds and equipment for the various
training or recording events.
HSI projects are linked to many mission agencies and churches.
-----------
MULTI-LANGUAGE
MEDIA -- A RESOURCE FOR INDIGENOUS WORSHIP TAPES:
In the MLM catalog are cassettes and a few CDs that circle the globe.
This is an ideal way to learn how the Christians sing and worship
in different parts of the world. It is also an ideal way to provide
materials to encourage believers from these parts of the world.
Finally, these recordings provide an effective, low-key way to introduce
the Gospel to non-believers from the nations and cultures represented
in the recordings. For information on ordering a catalog, use the
following email address: mlminfo@multilanguage.com, or visit their
web site
STUDIO
10 - Another recording initiative is the Studio TEN Ministries
(Testimony to Every Nation) The mission of Studio TEN is "to Proclaim
the gospel of Christ and partner with Church planters to establish
vibrant worshiping Churches, encourage, disciple and facilitate
a culturally relevant expression of worship beginning in the most
oppressed and least evangelized nations. The ministry objectives
include establishing A/V recording studios in strategic locations
for maximum impact with the view to provide training for indigenous
worship leaders, song writers, musicians and Audio/Visual recording
technicians; as well as produce high quality, culturally relevant
recorded media that presents Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The
first studio is located in a strategically-located country in Asia.
For more info, contact Dan Ingle. Studio1040@aol.com
***VERNACULAR MEDIA SERVICES
- Wycliffe - VMS Brings the Word to the World In a Culturally Relevant
Way - "Vernacular" means the local language or mother-tongue. "Media"
is the path used to bring a message. Vernacular media specialists
help Wycliffe and national translators use media tools that are
culturally appropriate. The media tools are like salt, making people
thirsty for God's Word. Scripture may be presented in the local
language on video or audiocassette, or in radio programs, dance
or drama. These tools help establish a bridge for oral cultures
to understand the Word of God. -- Vision Statement - Vernacular
Media Services (VMS) exists to provide a well functioning infrastructure
through which the use of vernacular media tools will be effectively
applied in Bible translation programs. Our purpose is to enhance
and encourage the use of vernacular literature, particularly the
Scriptures, and to provide a vehicle for the non-reading population
that is Biblically accurate, culturally appropriate and designed
to give local ownership.
