LET THE NATIONS BE GLAD - THE SUPREMACY OF
GOD IN MISSIONS
-by John Piper
========================================================
It's about God-centered mission rather than centered on people,
although the outworking of God-centeredness always affects those
around us. - C 1993. Baker Book House.
http://desiringgod.org/catalog/missions.htm#Let The Nations Be
Glad
To give you a little taste, John Piper says:
"Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is.
Missions exists because worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate,
not missions, because God is ultimate, not man…….Worship, therefore,
is the fuel and goal of missions. It's the goal of missions because
in missions we simply aim to bring the nationsinto the white-hot
enjoyment of God's glory. THE GOAL OF MISSIONS IS THE GLADNESS
OF THE PEOPLES IN THE GREATNESS OF GOD. Ps 97:1 "The Lord reigns;
let the earth REJOICE; let the many coastlands BE GLAD! Ps 67:3-4
Let the peoples praise you, O God; let ALL THE PEOPLES praise
you! Let the nations BE GLAD AND SING FOR JOY!"
….Passion for God in worship precedes the offer of God in preaching.
You can't commend what you don't cherish. Missionaries will never
call out, LET THE NATIONS BE GALD!! Who cannot say from their
own hearts, " REJOICE IN THE LORD…I WILL BE GLAD AND EXULT IN
YOU, I will sing praise to your name, O Most High…..MISSIONS BEGINS
AND ENDS IN WORSHIP.
If the pursuit of GOD's glory is not ordered ABOVE the pursuit
of MAN's good in the affections of the heart and the priorities
of the church, MAN will not be well served and GOD will not be
duly honored. I am not pleading for a diminishing of missions
but for a magnifying of God. When the flame of worship burns with
the heat of God's tru worth, the light of missinos will shine
to the most remote peoples on earth. And I long for that day to
come!
Where passion for God is weak, zeal for missions will be weak.
Churches that are not centered on the exaltation of the majesty
and beauty of God will scarcely kindle a fervent desire to 'declare
HIS GLORY among the nations (ps 96:3) even outsiders feel the
disparity between the boldness of our claim upon the nations and
the blandness of our engagement with God."……

"We cannot escape the arts. They permeate our lives and our culture
- the décor, architecture, music, entertainment, everyday utensils.
The imagination of this age, its ideas and concepts, percolate
throughout the culture via the arts. These ideas affect us for
good or for evil. The choice is not whether to live with art;
we must choose whether to live with good art or bad art. Art -
like all things human - needs to be redeemed. Christians cannot
abandon the arts to the secular world, but can use them to display
God's glory. This book will help us develop an informed artistic
taste, open yet critical, discerning yet appreciative of what
is truly excellent." (from book's back cover)

ART
& THE BIBLE - by Francis A. Schaeffer
==================================
ISBN: 0-87784-443-7 To order: mail@ivpress.com
Copyright ©1998 by InterVarsity Press ®
Francis A. Schaeffer offers a biblical perspective on the arts.
Reader comments on the book: A reader from Mpls, MN , July 1,
1998
"Schaeffer uses big-picture view to discuss art. If you've read
any of Schaeffer's books you know that the foundation of his Christian
beliefs is the idea that God's ultimate reality implies that the
spiritual life applies to every aspect of human life. In "Art
and the Bible" Schaeffer works from this premise to discuss the
subject of art and it's place in life. He begins by identifying
places in the Bible where references are made to art, and he analyzes
each in detail to identify deeper meaning and implications. Later
Schaeffer offers some perspectives on art. Especially relevant
is his analysis that art projects a world view. He maintains that
as Christians are to do in every other area of life, a Christian
artist has the opportunity and obligation to project the Christian
worldview through the his/her body of work. As part of this discussion
Schaeffer asserts that since the ultimate reality of God is really
truth itself, the worldview projected by a piece of art is one
of the standards by which art may be judged (he identifies three
others: technical excellence, validity-honesty to one's self and
worldview, and the integration of content and vehicle).
Schaeffer's detailed examination of what art is, does, and how
art does what it does provides an extremely useful perspective
from which to view the subject. I highly recommend this book."

MUSIC THROUGH THE EYES OF FAITH
By Harold Best
================================
San Francisco: Harper Collins, 1993. 225 pgs
Harold Best, Dean Emeritis
of Wheaton College (IL) Conservatory of Music and President Emeritis
of the National Association of Schools of Music, has written an
important book concerning the connections between music making
and Christian faith. Drawing on his experience as a performer,
composer, teacher, philosophoer and administrator, Best relates
musical practice to a larger theology of creation and creativity,
and explores new concepts of musical quality and excellence, musical
unity and pluralism. A challenging, though-provoking and much
needed book in the ongoing discussion of the role music plays
in societies today.
Christian musicians know of the obligation to make music as agents
of God’s grace. They make music graciously, whatever its kind
or style, as ambassadors of Christ, showing love, humility, servanthood,
meekness, victory, and good example…Music is freely made, by faith,

THE CULTURE WARRIOR
- David Traylor, ARTtribe
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
(Editor's Note) - I have just finished reading David's excellent
and very helpful book and would highly recommend it to all of
you! It covers a lot of very practical ground on many aspects
of the arts, including godly character development, encouraging
local believing arts councils, the need for arts patronage, and
many related aspects. If you have or are starting a creative arts
school, I would definitely recommend this as a book to consider
as one of the primary textbooks!
-------------------
"The Strategic Guidebook for the Believing Creative and Interpretive
Artist is not just another traditional academic overview and Biblical
justification of the arts. It is a comprehensive visionary call
for all Christians involved in the arts to equip themselves and
join in the struggle for popular culture and western civilization.
"The Culture Warrior" is a practical working manual,
written by a working artist, for working artists and all the others
that make the arts happen. The author systematically lays a solid
foundation for artists, in every creative discipline, with Biblical
solutions for the redemption of culture and the extension of the
kingdom of God. Here you will find insight into the various spiritual
and natural components for the formulation and execution of dynamic
and powerful works of art. The patron and the many types of patronage
are also explored in depth. "The Culture Warrior" is
a working manual for ALL believing artists, of ANY age or stage
in their creative career or spiritual maturity. This book is for
ALL believers who have been drawn into the arts and desire to
augment their teachings and faith with action. It explores the
dynamics of working within the context of contemporary Christianity
as well as the powerful "inspirational entertainment industry."
In "The Culture Warrior"
you will understand why there is no such thing as a "Christian"
art or "Christian" artist. The insights contained in
"The Culture Warrior" can be used within any artistic
discipline and God given creative vision. Any believing artist
will be able to use these concepts to move out into more effective
fields of creativity and aesthetic service for the glory of God,
the extension of His kingdom and the transformation of the popular
culture.

several tough issues all artists in ministry face, such as:

• Managing Your Emotions
• The Spiritual Disciplines of the Artist
Follow-up questions for group discussions and personal action
steps built into each chapter make this an excellent resource
for small group study.

THE
LOST GLORY: Moving Towards God's Plan for the Restoratio of
Glorious,
Creative Worship -
- David Markee
I have just finished reading
a copy of David Markee's very timely and much-needed book and
it has been so encouraging to read a book which talks about many
of the things that have been on my heart and the hearts of many
others I have worked with for years. It is a pleasure to help
to promote this book!
I really appreciate the focus
of David's book being the restoration of a growing awareness of
God's glory being restored through glorious, creative worship
- and aspects of the process to get there. "...hallowed by
Your Name...Your Kingdom, come, Your will be done on earth as
it is in heaven..." It is time we take back what the enemy
has stolen from us and return to our God, through our whole-hearted
worship, the glory he has been usurping from the Glorious One!
It has been amazing to watch
how the Holy Spirit has been working throughout the earth in preparing
and gradually raising up His musicians and artists over the past
couple of decades, but especially the past one, and even more
so since the millenium changed! Things seem to be beginning to
snowball!
As David's book stresses, it
is time for God's musicians and artists to take up their rightful
places in the destiny God has ordained for them/us in this crucial
time in history. We are also encouraged to allow the Holy Spirit
to bring us through that deep healing of our hearts which increasingly
removes the things that have continued to keep our hearts isolated
from Him in some areas, and our lives and artistic expressions
defiled in some ways, hindering our effectiveness.
David has included some very
helpful biblical history of the arts/artists as well, in order
to help lay a foundation to a better understanding of their/our
amazing destiny in Him as we gain a greater understanding of our
role as artists/musicians in God's cosmic purposes. It is crucial
for the Church and for God's musicians/artists to also understand
the biblical role of music and the arts in Scripture, and come
to know God the Artist who lives in us and is CHRIST IN US, THE
HOPE OF GLORY who can then express Himself through our art and
lives.
David talks about subjects
that I believe will whet the appetites of those who read his book
to continue to seek the Lord about more revelation in many or
all of these areas as they seek to come into the destiny God has
for them.

THE MINSTREL SERIES
- cassette series by Ray
Hughes
============================

Ministries: PO Box 5, Norene, Tennessee, USA 37136
Ray is a musician and worshipper, and founder of Selah Ministries.
He teaches an in-depth course on minstrel worship at The Foundry
in downtown Nashville and is actively involved with the Provision
ministry there. He also serves on the MorningStar ministry team
based in Charlotte, NC. He travels with the intent to declare
over entire cities and regions the new sound of victory the Lord
is raising up for these end times. Through his teaching, preaching
and prophesying, he aims to help restore the prophetic and apostolic
order of musicians and minstrels across the land. His dream is
to see the King of Kings high and lifted up, inhabiting the worship
of a people of truth that are submitted to and dominated by the
Spirit of the Living God.
Vision of Selah Ministries: Birthed from the hearts of worshippers
yearning to see the glory of God fill His temple, Selah Ministries
was established to further the releasing of musicians into their
destiny in God. By studying and researching the Word of God and
its ever-present connection to modern history as it relates to
God's purpose for music and musicians, we aim to sharpen the weapons
of worshipping warriors with tools of understanding. Our desire
is to equip musicians with the understanding of what usually comes
most natural to them; to define the core parts of who they are
before God and their various callings in Him. By ministering at
conferences, schools, churches and holding clinics, workshops
and seminars, we hope to see a release of the fresh prophetic
word to musicians urging them further into His presence. Our vision
is for an army of musicians prepared as worshipping warriors with
an end-time anointing.

MUSLIMS, MAGIC and the KINGDOM OF GOD - Rick
Love
##########################
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in and wanting
to further understand/apply contextualization and seeking to avoid
syncretism in Christian missions, while seeking to encourage the
use and development of indigenous expressions of worship through
music and the arts. It also includes some helpful and very practical
information on dealing practically with folk Islam and animistic/occultic
practices, which often involve music and the arts, and focuses
some very much needed attention on the whole aspect of the huge
need for godly character development in dealing with the process
of reclaiming people and aspects for the Kingdom of God. The book
has a major focus on the relevance and relationship of our efforts
in church planting and utilizing the arts, for example, as part
of the overall theme of the Gospel of THE KINGDOM OF GOD, which
perspective we often seem to miss, even in our thinking on discipling
the nations. The more we see everything we do as an integrated
part of the whole KINGDOM OF GOD, the more effective we will be
in our witness. A book I would recommend for anyone that wishes
to be involved in the Great Commission locally or overseas, whether
working with Muslims or others.

ANTHROPOLOGICAL
INSIGHTS FOR MISSIONARIES
- by Paul G. Hiebert
==========================================
Missionaries must understand the people they serve in their historical
and cultural settings. They must understand themselves similarly.
Otherwise, the author warns, missionaries may proclaim a meaningless
and irrelevant message.
One source of help in this essential quest is the field of study
called anthroplogy. The author, an expert in this field, taps
its insights for missionaries in a way that few others do.

A Time To Sing. A Manual For The African
Church
=============================================
A review by S. Hall
King, Roberta R. 1999. A Time To Sing. A Manual For The African
Church. Evangel Publishing House: Nairobi, Kenya. 183p.
At last - a resource written with our African colleagues in mind.
Dr. King’s book aims to equip small groups wishing to meet to
compose heart-music Scripture songs with all that they need to:
form such a group,
seek the Lord in His word regarding music and heart worship,
analyse indigenous music styles and forms,
begin and continue writing new songs in a style felt
to be their own, and
make recordings.
The material is equally useful to outsider facilitators who might
be engaged in encouraging such activities – people such as pastors,
missionaries, ethnomusicologists, etc. King’s focus is resolutely
Biblical, offering great resources to all involved in a music
ministry through clear Bible studies and ideas for application
into a local context. Particularly helpful are her suggestions
for appropriate song text Scriptures for churches in different
stages of formation and growth. Each section ends with a challenge
to the reader and those working with small composing groups to
pursue Bible studies and research on local music. A number of
tables showing how to make orderly comparisons of different themes
are included. The final index (including even the names of the
composers cited) and Scripture index are great helps in browsing
the text for specific elements. There is not a large bibliography,
but key texts (Chenoweth, Chernoff, Klem, Kraft, Merriam, Nettl,
Nketia, Sogaard, etc) are referenced and should be made available
through SIL libraries.
Dr. King includes an extensive chapter on discovering song form,
written from the perspective of insiders discovering their own
music. Examples of the “call and response” song form, ranging
from very simple to “high text load” are given. The texts are
given in an African language and an English translation, along
with a score in Western notation for some of them. All that is
lacking is a CD of the actual performances to serve as examples
to groups.
Throughout, graphic icons are used to flag up different suggestions,
technical definitions, tips and practical examples from King’s
22 years’ experience across the African continent. Her metaphors
such as music as soup requiring certain ingredients, or a song
as a mango which grows and ripens, could be applied in many settings.
Her approach bears in mind both the monolingual village location
and the multi-lingual urban context, encouraging believers to
define what is their heart music before beginning to compose.
Perhaps the only criticism would be the amount of preparation
prior to composition that she suggests, although it is understood
that groups will be worshipping together from the beginning using
the musical resources that they already have available to them.
This book is a great resource for all those involved in facilitating
workshops or local composing groups, and would be a good tool
to give to local Scripture Use committees for continuation of
the composition process after an initial workshop. A translation
into French would open up the text to thousands more of our African
brothers and sisters in Christ who long to sing a new song to
the Lord.

MY TONGUE IS THE PEN: How Audiocassettes
Can Serve the Non-Reading World
- Marilyn Malmstrom
=====================================
This book emphasizes the importance of the integration of audio
activities into the overall strategy of literacy and language
development. It is designed to meet the growing need for documentation
on the why's and how's of audiocassette usage.
In many language groups, the illiteracy rates remain high, despite
yers of literacy efforts. The challenge comes in trying to find
ways and methods to provide teaching and training that will attract
and build up a community while encouraging further literacy. In
recent years, the need to include traditional and modern nonprint
media has become more evident. More and more people are using
a variety of nonprint media forms with a great deal of success.
MY TONGUE IS THE PEN makes available the principles needed to
successfully include an appropriate audiocassette program in a
language program strategy. The presentation allows for the kind
of flexibility needed to make the audio element in a program effective
in a given language community. ISBN: 0-88312-812-8 To order: SIL,
International Academic Bookstore, 7500 W. Camp Wisdom Road, Dallas,
TX 75236
NOTE: There are also principles in this book which apply to the
development and utilization of various forms of media to reach
the unreached through music and the arts. There are millions of
non-readers who may not ever have the chance to become literate,
but who are able to relate to an appropriate presentation of the
Gospel through music and the arts.

PEOPLE OF THE DRUM OF GOD – COME!
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Ethnography of a Speech Surrogate Performance Paradigm
-- by Paul Neeley, 1999, Dallas: SIL, 300 pages
Have you ever thought about how to gather your rural congregation
if you were in the African bush? This book details how one church
leader in Cameroon uses a hollow log "talking drum" to communicate
to everyone in the area, calling them to early morning prayer
twice a week.
The drummed poem changes every week as the various parts of the
discourse are rearranged, repeated, or omitted according to the
performer's discretion.
The drum calls, entreats, exhorts, even insults people (calling
them "little monkeys" and "a solitary bush pig") as the drumming
of the church catechist reminds the villagers to remember the
vows they made at baptism and to come to church now. The final
stanza warns people to think ahead to the day when they will die
and see God face to face to give account of their lives - and
to therefore act accordingly here on earth.
The book gives unprecedented insight into how the traditional
art form of a "talking drum" can be used in the service of the
church, communicating to people using a medium that is culturally
relevant. The book is fairly academic, using the same material
as in the author's dissertation, but all technical terms are explained.
The analysis ranges from the connection of spoken syllables to
the drumstrokes, to the creation of lines and stanzas at the discourse
level, to the level of community comprehension. This study draws
from such diverse academic disciplines as sociolinguistics, anthropology,
semiotics, cognition, performance studies, phonology, communication
theory, discourse studies, aesthetics, and ethnomusicology to
paint a multifaceted picture of the "art of the talking drum"
used to gather Christians in rural Cameroon.
This book, a detailed example of an existing "ethnic art medium"
now used in a Christian context, is available from the author
at - paulneeley@netscape.net - ; two 60-minute audio cassette
tapes that contain the actual drumming and accompany the book
are also available.

REVIEW: "WORSHIP - THE GLOBAL HALLELUJAH!"
- reviewed by Paul Neeley - paulneeley@juno.com
- previously published in EM News 9:2
Wycliffe Bible Translators
has published a new book: "Worship - The Global Hallelujah!"
Full of Bible verses and photos, thoughts, prayers, and song lyrics
from around the world, the 90-page book paints a panorama of all
peoples coming to God "in need, in prayer, in song - in His
strength, for His glory." The book has 28 phrases of "Worship
is
" completed by various constituent elements with
verbal and pictorial illustrations. Examples include: God's children
gathering to proclaim his faithfulness, both quiet trusting and
loud proclaiming, listening to God and taking him to heart, a
heart that sings to God, the overflow of God's love to the whole
world, and much more. The book leads us into reflection on the
myriad facets of worship, and what they look like in different
cultures. Responses can be written in short journalling spaces
provided.
A unique feature about the book is its diversity of sources which
have been compiled into a coherent whole. Thoughts from theologians
and pastors sit beside song lyrics from nonliterate composers
in Africa. Teachings by the likes of John Piper, A.W. Tozer, and
Judson Cornwall blend with colorful photos of people dancing unto
the Lord, singing his praises, celebrating his goodness, living
daily life as an act of worship. And don't miss the photo of people
literally "leaping with joy" among the Sabaot people
of Kenya, where more than 10 cassettes of indigenous Scripture
songs using the local instruments have had a major impact in the
society.
If you want a book on worship that reflects the global diversity
of God's worshipers here on earth, you won't find one better than
this. Not only that, pray through the book and consider how God
wants you personally to demonstrate "worship is
"
to the world around you. A significant challenge, but one that
will bear much fruit.

THE SOUND OF THE HARVEST - Music's Mission
In Church and Culture - J. Nathan Corbitt.
==========================================================
Martin Luther, noting music's role in worship, once commented
that "he who sings prays twice." Serving as a vital complement
to preaching and teaching - and, in a sense, preaching and teaching
through its own medium - music has helped to characterize Christian
denominations and spread the gospel to the far corners of the
globe. Presenting an integrative blend of music, communications,
and missions theory, THE SOUND OF THE HARVEST examines music's
role in the church and culture today, and also present a multicultural
outlook on this art form.
Nathan Corbitt is professor of communications and music at Eastern
College (USA), spent eleven years working in Africa in cross-cultural
communications and music.

"
The growing American interest in the exploration of
African rhythms and related musical practices is very much appreciated
in its African homeland. Though the African Diaspora has already
made significant contributions to the musical traditions of the
Americas, the recognition that Africa has still much more to offer
is encouraging a new wave of interaction in a variety of learning
and performance situations. This musical interaction is taking
place both in Africa and abroad between African master drummers
and other instrumentalists, and American percussionists and other
musicians and educators. The availability of recordings made for
teaching, such as this set (two audio cassette tapes), will enable
students of African percussion to have access not only to some
of the repertoire of noted African drummers, but also to models
uniquely recorded in actual performance which students can study
and emulate

I was absolutely thrilled when I ran across this incredible resource
for anyone evangelizing or planting churches among Muslims, but
which I believe especially musicians and artists would appreciate
being able to utilize in their approaches to Muslims.
This incredible online book (free) is written by authors (Dr.
P. Goble and S. Munayer) who know the Muslim mindset/world view
and who have utililzed Muslim forms of communication to deliver
the message of the Gospel through indirect stories, parables,
poetry, etc. It is an incredible piece of work and one which I
believe God will use greatly to touch the Muslim heart! They are
presenting the Gospel in a way which is very meaningful to Muslims.

Excerpts from web site above:
"
Theodore Levin's
prime achievement in his first book, The Hundred Thousand Fools
of God, is writing a rich, deep text that dignifies the Central
Asian culture. An ethnomusicologist, Levin first visited Central
Asia in 1974. Three years later he became the fifth American to
study in Tashkent, Uzbekistan's capital and Central Asia's largest
city, and the first American to study Central Asian music. A decade
later, after the break-up of the Soviet Union, Levin did the greatest
portion of research for this book. From 1990-1994, he traveled
extensively with an Uzbek musicologist Levin refers to as OM.
Together, these two men engage in a quest to find traditional
music throughout Central Asia -- what they found were the "fools
of God."
The title of the text refers to the heritage of the Central Asian
musicians: not only their ethnicity, but also their spiritual
traditions. In analyzing one musician's work, OM notes that musicians
are always musicians plus another vocation: musician-comedian,
musician-poet, musician-philosopher, or musician-"fool of
God." OM explains, "For a fool of God, music first and
foremost conveys a moral and spiritual power, and performing music
is a calling that carries a moral responsibility."

THE WORLD OF THE ALEVIS: Issues of Culture
and Identity - Gloria L. Clarke
============================================================
This book provides a valuable resource and provokes question for
further study. Clarke observes that 'ocak' families, in addition
to their service in the spiritual realm, also serve their communities
through performing and teaching art with spiritual content. She
has conducted the fieldwork among 24 'ocak-s' in Turkey, in order
to understand how intensely this service is offered at present....this
study provides an in-depth look at the historic and contemporary
issues of culture and identity grappled with by the Alevi people
of Turkey. Since 1990, they have been openly exploring these issues
and seeking new paradigms to fit ancient beliefs to the modern
world. This study examines the role of the 'dede', spiritual leader
and primary culture bearer. Since research on the North Indian
gharana is more available in ethnomusicological literature, the
parallels between the 'ocak', a dynasty of faith carriers, and
the gharana, a dynasty of culture carriers, were used to establish
a method of observation.
Gloria L. Clarke, a Canadian, has spent 10 years in Turkey studying
Turkish music and folklore and conducting ethnomusicological research
throughout Anatolia. Previously she worked in India for 1 1/2
years. She has a doctorate in ethnomusicology and folklore from
Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul, where she also lectured. She
presently resides in Istanbul.

MUSIC OF THE ARABS
THE MUSIC OF THE ARABS
by Habib Hassan Touma
Encompassing a history of more than 2000 years, the music of the
Arabs is unique among the world’s various musical cultures. Based
on a modal tone system, Arab music is characterized by the maqam
phenomenon, an original type of improvisation that is common to
both secular and sacred Arabian art music. This book is the first
of its kind, presenting an overview of the musical life of the
Arabs throughout their cultural history. The book covers secular
and sacred, instrumental and vocal, improvised and composed music
and discusses music of contemporary Arab musicians. Technical
analysis of the music is included, along with a detailed bibliography,
a discography (mainly covering the last 50 years), and a guide
to the Arabic alphabet for English speakers.
Available separately to accompany the book is a CD of seven traditional
Arabic pieces, performed by contemporary Arab musicians.

Review of "Serpent of the Nile:
Women and Dance in the Arab World"
by Wendy Buonaventura
===================================
NY: Interlink Books,
1998
-- Like the threads intertwined
in a Turkish carpet, the subject of women and dance in Islam is
intertwined with various topics including gender roles in a patriarchal
society; geometry and aesthetic patterning; changing attitudes
of approval/disapproval by peers and authorities and tourists;
social status and income; differing performance practice at home,
for display and abroad; power and politics; foreign expectations
of "exoticism;" and ethnicity. This book serves as a
good overview of womens' solo dance and Egyptian culture; some
of the insights most interesting to this reviewer will be brought
out here. --
The author has been teaching
the traditional women's solo dance in its Egyptian form (baladi)
for more than a decade and has travelled in Egypt. It should be
noted right at the first that baladi is much more than what has
come to be bowderlized and known as "belly-dancing;"
rather, the women'solo dance is a high art that may involve mime,
or feats of acrobatic skill such as balancing cups of liquid -
or even swords - on the head.
"Centuries ago,"
writes the author, "When dance ceased to be merely a means
of self-expression and a part of communal ceremony and became
a secular entertainment, it was taken up and refined by the professional
performers who now emerged on the scene... In the Arab world,
as in patriarchal cultures the world over, its acceptability or
unacceptability was intimately bound up with the role of women
in society and with what was permitted and what was forbidden
them. On the acceptable side was dance as a social pastime, performed
in the home by women to entertain each other. On the unacceptable
side was professional dance, which was the province of gypsies,
minority communities and the poorer members of society... The
reputation of professional dancers varied according to the social
status of their audience. Those who performed for the wealthy
and ruling elite were highly regarded, as well as being wealthy
themselves."
In 1799 the "modernization"
of Egypt was begun with the help of European advisors. The ghawazee
dancers were banished to Upper Egypt. Any woman who defied the
ban was liable to fifty lashes for the first offense, and some
were killed. Nevertheless, some dancers disobeyed the edict; travellers
noted that it was always possible to find them if one looked hard
enough, and one American writer commented that most tourists,
if given the choice, would rather have seen the dancing than the
pyramids. Even at this time, the romanticized view of "the
exotic Other" exerted a strong pull on Westerners.
The author goes on to note that the taxes paid by the dancers
amounted to more than a tenth of all taxes collected in Cairo,
so that as a result of their banishment to Upper Egypt, the citizens
of Cairo were subjected to higher taxes. In 1866 the ban was lifted
and the dancers returned to Cairo, and taxpayers were happier.
In the first two decades of the twentieth century, baladi became
increasingly popular in the Western cabaret setting, where it
went through fundamental changes as it took on the Western idealized
exoticism of "Orientalism." What it really was in its
place of origin was changed to fit what the (paying) foreign audience
wanted it to be.
Throughout the Arab world, there has always been ambivalence about
women and dance, and for that matter, about women in general.
"Women are seen as a potential disruptive force, due to the
assumption that men are unable to resist their powerful lure.
The word for 'chaos' in Arabic is the same as that used to describe
a beautiful woman, fitna, a word which carries all the connotations
of the femme fatale. The solution to the problem of what is seen
by Muslim men as woman's disruptive sexual power is threefold:
to define her sphere of influence as the home; to confine her
presence to the harem, where children are reared and the daily
business of the household is carried out; and to enforce the use
of the veil."
"Islamic society has never quite resolved its ambivalence
towards female dancers, who, in many respects, defy its laws concerning
the conduct of women in society... it has none the less developed
a form which harmonizes closely with the visual arts of Islam,
especially regarding its effect on the onlooker. It is a dance
which soothes the mind rather than distracts."
"The patterning of a [baladi] dance may be compared to that
of an oriental carpet in which each individual design has its
own beauty, its own special quality. When we look at this kind
of carpet, we do not focus only on a single central figure. So
it is with the dance. Each passage reaches a resolution, or climax,
of its own rather than building to a single, all-important resolution.
Sometimes a dancer may not even come to a final ending, but will
continue her movement as she exits, leaving us to carry on the
dance in our own imagination. Again like an Oriental carpet, whose
design continues into the borders, the implication is that there
is no end to the patterns; it may go on and on, duplicating itself
in untold ways.
"Comparing Baladi to this type of ornamental art reveals
that while the women's dance has often been condemned by Islamic
fundamentalists it has, over the years, evolved in ways which
harmonize closely with the abstract, stylized nature of Islamic
art in general. A tradition in which no natural object has served
as model, its geometric motifs and flowing arabesques evoke above
all a feeling of contemplation and calm." I'm not sure all
men would agree with this assertion as to its effects, but there
you have a dancer's point of view.
Since most of the author's experience and many historic examples
are from Egypt, the book would have been better titled "Women
and Baladi Dance in the Egyptian World" (the author does
not deal much with other types of dancing or other countries).
The author's religious bias is rather on the contemporary "goddess"
side and is overtly anti-Christian in a number of places.
The book is an interesting study of the correlations between societal
expectations and dance forms, and is recommended to anyone working
with dance in Islamic societies. The book is lavishly illustrated
with photographs and paintings of dancers - 90 full color, 50
b/w - and contains a chapter on relevant Arabic music and instruments.
