LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO INSURE YOUR MISSIONARY OVERSEAS? -- Try Jeff Gulleson AT: goodnbor@juno.com. He can handle your overseas worker even if he or she can't come home for a physical! He advertises low rates... Available for both short- and long-term trips! From Brigada

More on that from Current Trends: INTERNATIONAL INSURANCE FOR AMERICANS THAT COVERS FURLOUGHS TOO! Jeff Gulleson writes: "If you are an American you may find it hard to get insurance coverage that will work on both sides of the Atlantic, Pacific or equator. We spent much time tesearching this matter in the last few months. Here are some options: **** INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GROUP (IMG) – A person getting IMG's 'Global Medical Policy' while in the USA must leave within 30 days of signature. They must have intent to reside outside the USA for at least 6 consecutive months. For example, if they buy a one year policy on January 1, 1998 they would have to leave the USA by February 1, 1998. If they renewed their policy while outside the USA, say on January 1, 1999, they could come back to the USA and still be covered up to the second anniversary date of the policy (Jan 1, 2000) on condition that they had "intent to reside abroad" before the second anniversary date of the policy (Jan. 1, 2000). **** SPECIALTY RISK INTERNATIONAL, INC - On their 'Signature Global Medical Plan' they will cover a person for six months before he/she leaves the USA. The individual must be out of the USA for six months and then can return and be covered for another six months in the USA. In other words he/she must spend six months of every insurance year outside the USA. In 1998 SRI plans to provide a special missionary policy that will cover an American missionary outside the USA and give him one year of furlough coverage in the USA. The premium will probably be marked-up 25% to 30% for the time the missionary is on furlough. This new plan may be called the 'Missionary Signature Plan.' **** LIAISON PLUS - Coverage under this program is valid in the Home Country or Country of Residence of the Insured Person for up to 60 days per 12 months of coverage, or pro rata thereof. The insured must be abroad for at least 1 month before Home Country coverage is available. **** DIPLOMAT - One month's coverage for every 6 months outside the USA for an extra 10% surcharge. **** GATEWAY - Home Country Coverage is valid during visits to the insured person's home country or country of residence for up to 60 days per 12 months of coverage, or pro rata thereof, for injury or sickness which occurs during such visit." From Current Trends: INTERNATIONAL INSURANCE THAT COVERS 12 MONTH FURLOUGHS! "A major problem is to find an insurance policy for Americans that covers them on both sides of the Atlantic or Pacific. Some policies will cover you for a month or up to six months in the USA but many people plan for 12 month furloughs. Now 'Specialty Risk International' has developed a policy that will cover a person for 12 full months while on furlough in the USA on condition that he/she has spent a full 12 months outside the USA. This is the only individual insurance policy I know of that is designed specifically for individuals who want to be covered during a 12 month furlough in the USA. Besides providing the usual outpatient and inpatient coverage the policy also covers maternity, mental and nervous health, physiotherapy, chiropractic, well-child care (limited to three visits per policy period), emergency medical evacuation, repatriation, emergency reunion etc. The premiums can be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually with check, money order, Visa or Mastercard. The biggest savings are available if paid annually. Please contact Good Neighbor Insurance if you would like more information." (International Insurance Insights, March 1998)

Medical Insurance for Missionaries
Research Results

Thank you Brigada for posting my original request for information! This took a lot longer than I had imagined. Thanks everyone else who've been waiting on results.

I've been able to get information on 9 companies which offer medical insurance coverage options for people who serve as missionaries or who are self-employed, living overseas (away from country of origin). You must assess your own needs and confer with the specific company to determine coverage & eligibility. DO CHECK CLOSELY for coverage needs for where & to
whom you're ministering. Ask for COMPLETE DETAILS on coverage & EXCLUSIONS. Many companies exclude coverage to treat difficult diseases: TB, HIV. Many exclude coverage for treatment needs as result of war/hostilities.

Premiums are for insurance to cover catastrophic contingencies. These are not health plans. They do not normally cover medical services often covered by USA-style Health Maintenance Organizations or health plans/benefits of private sector companies.

Many policies require that you do not reside for more than 30-90 days in your country of origin (the country which issued you your passport). Most companies package their plans, there is little room to customize based on individual needs.

List of Insurance Companies meeting needs of Christian Missionaries Anual per person premiums ranged from $150 to $2500. Services & deductibles vary too greatly to offer company by company comparison.
