ENCOURAGING MUSICAL / ARTISTIC INGIENOUS
EXPRESSIONS OF WORSHIP IN LOCAL ETHNIC CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIPS
===================
-- Grace Wiebe
As we consider the degree to which the encouragement and development
of indigenous musical/artistic expressions of worship encourages the
growth of the newly emerging church plants in cross-cultural situations
overseas, we must not neglect the need to also look closer to home for
similar ways to aid/encourage the development of indigenous expressions
of worship in the variety of local ethnic churches in our cities --
for example, in Vancouver, BC, Canada, we have Farsi-speaking fellowships,
Arabic ones, Spanish, Chinese, Punjabi, Hindi and Laotian, to name a
few.
If we encourage these churches as we are doing/desire to do with overseas
church plants, imagine the renewal of worship which can take place in
their midst which in turn can and will likely also impact their people
around the globe as they grow in their desire to see their own people
worshipping Jesus!
What are some ways that we can encourage them?
POTENTIAL OPTIONS TO CONSIDER:
-----------
1) IF THEY’RE ALREADY USING THEIR OWN CULTURE’S REDEEMED WORSHIP FORMS:
* Spend time in their fellowships and gain an appreciation for their
music/art and expressions of worship - this would show support and you
could learn a lot from them, their culture, etc. It would also help
to build relationships and unity.
* Join in and learn to play one of their traditional instruments or
learn one of their artistic skills
* If able to do so and if their music isn’t yet written in musical script,
write down their music so they can put it into book form and pass it
on amongst their own people, or encourage their people to write it down
if they know how to write their own music. In order to multiply what
you hope to see happening, you might want to teach some of the appropriate
people how to read and write their own music, if that hasn’t been done
and becomes a felt need.
* Record their music so that they can pass it on amongst their own people
and so it can help to build their repertoire of music and be a blessing
to others from their background.
* Encourage their musicians to teach and pass on their skills to other
believers in their own culture so that their heart music will not be
discouraged or lost. They may already be doing this, but to have an
outsider affirm the value of passing along their redeemed heart music
will be an encouragement to them.
* Encourage their musicians and artists to teach other believers, those
not from their
culture who are interested in their music, to learn to play their instruments
or learn their art. Give the ‘insiders’ and the ‘outsiders’ opportunity
to bless other believers with their artistic gifts and give them opportunity
to take their arts into the street, as appropriate, as well, in order
to draw people to Jesus.
* Encourage multi-cultural worship times with local ethnic fellowships
* Coordinate, along with local ethnic believers, International Music/Arts
Festivals that operate on biblical principles and present godly values
to a hurting, searching world. This in turn can open up opportunities
to minister to those that come, as the Holy Spirit leads.
* Invite local ethnic musicians and artists to fully participate in
local retreats that are geared towards developing God’s artists and
musicians to be released into their roles in the Great Commission.
2) IF THEY’RE NOT ALREADY USING THEIR OWN CULTURE’S REDEEMED WORSHIP
FORMS:
-------------
* Encourage their leaders and musicians/artists to develop their own
cultural expressions of worship according to how they perceive what
Scripture teaches on the subject of worship/praise, the role of biblical
artists and musicians in Scripture, the role of artists and musicians
in the Great Commission, etc.
* Encourage them to study biblical principles of reclaiming/redeeming
aspects of culture that are redeemable. Not all aspects of culture CAN
be redeemed.
These are just a few ideas to prayerfully consider in your local situations.
We need your input on this subject. Please do send us (GCWAC@DiscipleTheNations.org)
ideas that you have and especially examples of how God has led you in
encouraging ethnic musicians and artists in their expressions of worship
to God.

RECORDING INDIGENOUS / ETHNIC MUSIC
LOCALLY OR OVERSEAS - interested? - upcoming mtg to discuss on Feb
9
===========================
For local/regional Christian recording engineers / producers / arrangers,
etc.:
We could like to present something to you for your prayerful consideration.
--------
Most of you are either involved in doing sound, recording worship/Christian
music, desktop recording, or interested in the aspect of somehow seeing
this developed in your sphere/s.
For the past number of years, we as the Great Commission Worship & Arts
Center (Surrey), Ethnic Worship & Arts Focus (Surrey) and the International
Worship & Arts Network have been in the process of developing an
arm of the network which focuses on raising up a team/network of teams
(internationally) of Christian musicians/recording engineers, producers,
etc. to assist church planting teams in helping to encourage the development
of indigenous music/worship music in their respective regions of the
globe - and especially among unreached peoples who do not have access
to the Gospel in many cases.
This is done by:
=============
1) teams going overseas to help set up a desktop recording studio (in
conjunction with a church planting team already stationed there), to
teach the locals and the church planting teams how to use the studio,
and to help them record their first CD.
2) giving email consultation, help, advice etc. and providing resources
through our web sites and in other ways to assist church planters with
this process and with getting the equipment they need.
3) helping to potentially raise some financial support or needed equipment
to see these desktop recording studios set up and effectively utilized.
4) seeing a prayer base raised up for these strategic and vital endeavours
Having these CDs recorded and produced is beneficial in many ways, but
a couple of the MAJOR benefits are:
=====================
1) it provides a wonderful way to encourage, build up and help unite
the emerging body of believers of that particular people group - not
only in that region but potentially in any region where they exist around
the globe (including in multicultural cities like ours) as we help to
distribute their music through our international connections
2) the CDs can become a witnessing tool among the same people group
- whether overseas or here locally in our multicultural cities
3) the worship music is being sought out by Christian and TV programs/stations
beaming into these countries. Because of our contact with them, we can
connect the resources with the opportunities/ministries in order to
provide a wider audience for the recorded music.
Again, there are also other benefits, but this is just to name a few.
A GROWING REQUEST FROM CHURCH PLANTERS
=====================
A growing request among church planting teams in various nations is
the request for this type of team to assist them in these types of developments.
There is already a team from the US in existence focusing on doing this
(see more below where the HEART
SOUNDS INTERNATIONAL ministry is described), and we have had a growing
burden to see a similar team developed here locally in the Lower Mainland,
which we envision being networked/partnered with HEART
SOUNDS INTERNATIONAL. The Director of
HEART SOUNDS INT'L and I have worked together for many years already
and share almost identical vision.
This local team could potentially assist ethnic musicians/churches in
our city and potentially across Canada in developing desktop recording
facilities or partnering with existing churches/ministries that have
desktop recording facilities, in order to help assist local ethnic believing
communities in the development of the recording of indigenous Christian
music/worship songs.
SOME POSSIBLE EXAMPLES OF WHAT COULD BE DONE
============================
One way, for example, might be for a church who has a recording studio
to provide opportunity to record ethnic music/worship songs and potentially
provide discounted rates if that is a need in that particular situation.
Another way might be to train local ethnic musicians/engineers/producers/arrangers,
etc. in these types of skills.
Perhaps as it would develop, the team could develop, together, a training
course for recording teams to be sent out nationally or even internationally.
This team could also provide counsel/advice via email through contacts
through HEART SOUNDS INTERNATIONAL,
or help to provide prayer or financial support or help provide equipment
for these kinds of needs locally or overseas through HEART
SOUNDS INTERNATIONAL.
This team could also potentially send some of its people to go on short
term overseas trips (perhaps networked through HEART
SOUNDS INTERNATIONAL) to assist church planters that we are in contact
with in these kinds of ways.
NETWORKING/PARTNERING WITH HEART SOUNDS INTERNATIONAL
=========================
Because we have many years of missions experience, we could provide
some helpful orientation and cross cultural information to help prepare
a team or teams to go overseas for special projects as appropriate.
Because of our contacts, we could provide many potential opportunities
for you.
Because of our networks, we could also connect you with many others
around the globe whom God is raising up with similar vision, etc.
We want to serve in whatever way we can in the role God has us in to
see God do what He is doing/wanting to do and to network/partner with
people, churches, Christian educators, missions and ministries around
the globe to assist in the development of these types of opportunities
in order to strengthen the Body to become whole-hearted worshippers
of Jesus Christ and to see the many unreached peoples reached with the
Gospel - locally, nationally and internationally.
ARE YOU INTERESTED?
====================
If this type of opportunity is of interest to you and you would like
to hear more and meet others locally who may be interested in prayerfully
considering such an option, please do let me know by FEB. 5.
If you are interested, Paul N., one of our missionary ethnomusicologists
(who can also give you some helpful input on this since he has been
involved in one form of recording indigenous worship music in various
nations) is going to be here from Dallas, TX in late Jan., early Feb.,
and so we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join
with us and any of you who are interested.

HEART SOUNDS INTERNATIONAL
-
Encouraging the Development of Indigenous Worship Songs through Recording
From: www.heart-sounds.org
#########################
"Heart Sounds International
is about "releasing worship among all peoples"
Who we are:
-----------------
Heart Sounds International (HSI) is a fellowship of trained worship
musicians and recording engineers committed to seeing God release the
"heart worship" of people groups and churches. We accomplish this through:
* Teaching in biblical principles of worship
* Training local musicians to apply their God-given compositional abilities
to write their own indigenous worship songs
* Recording local believers using state-of-the-art digital recording
equipment
* Installing recording facilities for local Christian musicians to continue
their own worship recording projects
Where we go:
--------------------
HSI teams work predominantly in the non-western world. We are particularly
committed to helping believers in the more restricted places of Asia,
Africa and the Middle East.
What we do:
----------------
HSI leadership form teams of worship musicians and recording engineers
to take 10-12 day "mission trips" to help in teaching, training, recording
or installing of facilities.
How we are funded:
----------------------------
Each musician on the team donates his time, covers his/her own travel
costs and when possible contributes equipment to the projects. HSI leadership
seek donations of funds and equipment for the various training or recording
events.
HSI projects are linked to many mission agencies and churches. The projects
are sponsored by Operation Mobilization and coordinated by Frank Fortunato,
OM International Music Director. Contact: fort@usa.om.org
