MEDIA

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
VERNACULAR MEDIA SERVICES

What is vernacular media?

It is media (videotape, audio cassettes, music, drama, filmstrips, and flip charts) produced in the heart language (mother tongue) of the intended audience. SIL workers use vernacular media to encourage literacy and scripture use in their translation projects. One of the most dynamic effects of media is that it allows us to reach the millions of people who can not read, and who may never learn to read, the life changing Word of God.
As an example - The Scripture in Use Media Department of Papua New Guinea began in 1994. They have dubbed several languages onto Scripture video including Luke, Genesis, and the Jesus film. Recently Jim and Diana Parker, translators for the Qaqet language, wrote of the astounding responses to the Luke video showings. "The film gave great confidence in assuring people that their language could be read. It really sparked a motivation to literacy I have never experienced before in this area. Men came the next morning, interrupting their normal work routine so they could purchase a New Testament and get started in reading."
VMS offers specialized training and continuing support to non-print media personnel, helping maximize the production and use of media in local language projects with SIL and other agencies. Vernacular Media Specialists currently serve in more than 15 countries.
Vernacular Media Services offers an ideal opportunity for singles and couples who want to be involved directly with language programs and who enjoy traveling. Vernacular media specialists are serving in a number of countries as well as at the JAARS Center. Additional Career Members or Short Term Assistants (STAs) are currently needed on all continents.
Following training, orientation, and partnership development, STAs would take a two-year assignment, Career members, a long term one. He or she would be primarily involved in working with translators, literacy specialists, and local leaders to produce media tools in the vernacular languages.
Skills Needed:
Mechanical aptitude and interpersonal relational skills are a must.
Previous training or experience in media related fields, literacy, linguistics, or public relations is desirable, but not required.
In addition to Quest and ICC, VMS personnel must attend the following:
JAARS Management Training (one week)
JAARS Vernacular Media Service Training (12 weeks) - Answers the questions . . . How does media fit into a language program? How to interact with teams and entities for planning media in language programs. Provides hands on training in all technical aspects of recording, productions, and maintenance of audio and video tapes, players, recording equipment, computer editing, duplicators, etc.
For more information and applications, call 1 (800) 890-0628 and ask for Vernacular Media Services.
