Learning to Hide Under the Shelter of His Wings

- by Grace Wiebe, June 2007

In this day of increasing threats on every side of us, I believe the Holy Spirit is inviting us how to further learn to experience His protection in deepening ways in every area of our lives (and around us) as we become more practiced at hiding under the shelter / shadow of His wings in the midst of our fears, disasters or what have you! The more we learn to do this, the more we can help others also find rest and peace as they, too, come to find shelter under His wings.

Following are some introductory Scriptures related to this theme. I would encourage you to mediate on these verses and also meditate on God's protection, God as your Refuge, Stronghold, Fortress, Deliverer, Glorious Sword, Shield, etc.

A great way to help you do this is to look up all of those words in the online concordance (http://www.biblegateway.com) so you get an idea of the context of these Scriptures in all of Scripture.

(All Scriptures from NIV unless otherwise stated)

Psalm 91 - I would encourage you to meditate often on the entire chapter. I believe this chapter is one which we will need to have become a part of our very being in order for us to not only survive but THRIVE in the future.

Psalm 91:1,2,4 - 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Psalm 57:1,2 - 1 Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me,
for in you my soul takes refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed.

2 I cry out to God Most High,
to God, who fulfills {his purpose} for me.

Psalm 63:7 - Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.

Psalm 61:4 - I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

Psalm 36:7 - How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.

Luke 13:34 "…how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings…"

Isaiah 34:15 - The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings; there also the falcons will gather, each with its mate.

Psalm 34:4,7, 19 - 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears….The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them… 19 A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all…"

2 Chron. 20 - Jehoshaphat's army

Deut. 33:12, 26ff - 12 About Benjamin he said:
"Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him,
for he shields him all day long,
and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders.
"

… 26 "There is no one like the God of Jeshurun,
who rides on the heavens to help you
and on the clouds in his majesty.

27 The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.
He will drive out your enemy before you,
saying, 'Destroy him!'

28 So Israel will live in safety alone;
Jacob's spring is secure
in a land of grain and new wine,
where the heavens drop dew.
29 Blessed are you, O Israel!
Who is like you,
a people saved by the LORD ?
He is your shield and helper
and your glorious sword.

Your enemies will cower before you,
and you will trample down their high places."

Isaiah 43
1 But now, this is what the LORD says-
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
"Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
3 For I am the LORD, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…"

May your hearts be strengthened as you find comfort and peace under the shadow / shelter of His wings!
