INTRO:
------
Many of you are interested in helping to further encourage Christian
musicians and artists in your city/region but may be wondering about
some ways in which that can be done without having to spend a lot of
time or money on it.
Following is one idea that you might wish to consider as an option...that
of sending a fax or email to the Christian bookstores in your city or
perhaps in cities across your country which might say something similar
to the following. (Many cities/countries have Christian Directories
which can provide this kind of information. It is also available on
the internet in many cases).
Potentially partnering together with local Christian bookstores in this
kind of way has great potential of seeing awareness of Christianity
& the Arts and the Great Commission issues growing in the local
churches and of seeing local Christian musicians/artists encouraged
and strengthened in biblical directions. The more that we can partner
together with local churches, missions, worship & arts ministries,
Christian and missions educators/equippers, resource providers, etc.,
the more effectively we can help to assist in the discipleship of Christian
musicians/artists in our cities/nations and indirectly/directly influence
the whole realm of music/arts and the media in our societies.

Intro
Proposal
========
Dear Brother or Sister;
It is a day when God is raising up, across the globe, an army of Christian
musicians and artists who desire to use their gifts to help them whole-heartedly
worship God, and to help others worship Him through their artistic expressions
– both locally and overseas through their own indigenous expressions
as appropriate!
In a day when the world and this generation is so greatly influenced
by music, the arts and the media, we as believers need to take seriously
our role in reclaiming music and the arts/media for the glory of God
and to be a part of seeing our cities and nation/s discipled as we’ve
been commanded in Scripture.
A big part of this process includes providing resources and training
which can help to equip Christian musicians and artists to understand
the role of music/arts in the Bible, the role of musicians and artists
in the Bible, and their role in the Great Commission. It is also imperative
that Christian musicians/artists understand the great need for godly
character as they move forward in their artistic pursuits as they are
led by the Holy Spirit.
The Great Commission Worship & Arts Center – located in Surrey,
BC - is seeking to partner with many aspects of the Body of Christ to
help to establish and strengthen the biblical foundations of musicians/artists
in our cities/nation who will bring glory to God through the arts and
help to reach our cities and nation (and beyond) through the arts.
PROPOSAL:
-------------------
I would like to propose to you a potential partnership that we could
enter into:
1) I would like to send you a listing of key books and videos/cassettes,
etc. for you to consider making available for sale in a Christianity
& the Arts section through your store.
2) In exchange, I would be happy to help pass the word around through
my web site, through the Ethnic Worship & Arts Focus newsletter
and to the director of the Vancouver Arts Network (Christian) (who also
has a newsletter networking Canadian Christian musicians and artists)
that your store has these resources available.
Would this be something you would consider? If so, please contact me
in this regard and I will send you a listing of some key resources which
are excellent and very helpful!!
I’m also sending you a Word97 attached file of free music/arts resources
that are available for Christian musicians/artists which you may wish
to photocopy and make available to those that buy your Christianity
& the Arts books/videos/cassettes, etc. from your store to help
them move forward in these directions. The resource sheet also includes
the vision statements of the various worship & arts ministries that
I’m representing.
I will look forward to hearing from you in this regard and trust that
we will be able to work together to help to assist Christian musicians
and artists in our cities and nations in making an increasing difference!
Many thanks for your time and considerations in this regard, and may
God bless you greatly in every way for His glory!
With much appreciation,

Re: Christianity & The Arts resources proposal
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Brother or Sister;
...
“...Thanks so much for your interest! I'm sending you the attached Word97
file which lists some books/resources which are available. It includes
a number of potential Christianity & the Arts sections which you
may wish to consider making available on your shelves, etc....(let me
know if it doesn't come through okay and I can re-send it via text format.)
Thanks : )
1) Christianity & the Arts - this would probably be the category
you would want to begin with since it's the most basic. This includes
some books on worship which can be found at:
http://DiscipleTheNations.org/index10.html
2) Reclaiming Music and the Arts for the Kingdom of God - this is also
something that many Christian musicians and artists are interested in
these days! (whether 'missions-focused' or not) - I would recommend
making these available as well.
3) Book List on Music & the Arts in Missions - this is a bit more
specialized, but I'm in the process of letting local Christian educators
(ie. Regent, ACTS, TWU, Christ for the Nations, Bible colleges, etc.)
re missions, music, arts and media know about these books and would
be happy to let them know that your store carries them or would make
them available for their contacts or students taking courses in these
fields, etc. (something we're also working on developing with them as
able)
4) Books Related to Ethnic Music and the Arts - again, this is more
specialized, and again, I'm in the process of letting local Christian
educators (ie. Regent, ACTS, TWU, Christ for the Nations, Bible colleges,
etc.) re missions, music, arts and media know about these books and
would be happy to let them know that your store carries them or would
make them available for their contacts or students taking courses in
these fields (something we're also working on developing with them as
able)
I hope this helps...let me know if you have further questions...and
I'll look forward to hearing what you are interesting in doing with
this so that I can let local folks know and hopefully pass some business
on to you as you help to encourage our Christian musicians/artists and
the Church at large re the arts in the 'bigger picture'!
Have a great day and God bless you and all the staff there! I greatly
appreciate your service!
Warmly,
Grace

LET THE NATIONS BE GLAD - THE SUPREMACY OF GOD IN MISSIONS
-by John Piper
========================================================
It's about God-centered mission rather than centered on people, although
the outworking of God-centeredness always affects those around us. -
C 1993. Baker Book House.
http://desiringgod.org/catalog/missions.htm#Let The Nations Be Glad
To give you a little taste, John Piper says:
"Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is.
Missions exists because worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate, not missions,
because God is ultimate, not man…….Worship, therefore, is the fuel and
goal of missions. It's the goal of missions because in missions we simply
aim to bring the nationsinto the white-hot enjoyment of God's glory.
THE GOAL OF MISSIONS IS THE GLADNESS OF THE PEOPLES IN THE GREATNESS
OF GOD. Ps 97:1 "The Lord reigns; let the earth REJOICE; let the many
coastlands BE GLAD! Ps 67:3-4 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let
ALL THE PEOPLES praise you! Let the nations BE GLAD AND SING FOR JOY!"
….Passion for God in worship precedes the offer of God in preaching.
You can't commend what you don't cherish. Missionaries will never call
out, LET THE NATIONS BE GALD!! Who cannot say from their own hearts,
" REJOICE IN THE LORD…I WILL BE GLAD AND EXULT IN YOU, I will sing praise
to your name, O Most High…..MISSIONS BEGINS AND ENDS IN WORSHIP.
If the pursuit of GOD's glory is not ordered ABOVE the pursuit
of MAN's good in the affections of the heart and the priorities of the
church, MAN will not be well served and GOD will not be duly honored.
I am not pleading for a diminishing of missions but for a magnifying
of God. When the flame of worship burns with the heat of God's tru worth,
the light of missinos will shine to the most remote peoples on earth.
And I long for that day to come!
Where passion for God is weak, zeal for missions will be weak.
Churches that are not centered on the exaltation of the majesty and
beauty of God will scarcely kindle a fervent desire to 'declare HIS
GLORY among the nations (ps 96:3) even outsiders feel the disparity
between the boldness of our claim upon the nations and the blandness
of our engagement with God."……

Francis A. Schaeffer offers a biblical perspective on the arts.
Reader comments on the book: A reader from Mpls, MN , July 1, 1998
"Schaeffer uses big-picture view to discuss art. If you've read any
of Schaeffer's books you know that the foundation of his Christian beliefs
is the idea that God's ultimate reality implies that the spiritual life
applies to every aspect of human life. In "Art and the Bible" Schaeffer
works from this premise to discuss the subject of art and it's place
in life. He begins by identifying places in the Bible where references
are made to art, and he analyzes each in detail to identify deeper meaning
and implications. Later Schaeffer offers some perspectives on art. Especially
relevant is his analysis that art projects a world view. He maintains
that as Christians are to do in every other area of life, a Christian
artist has the opportunity and obligation to project the Christian worldview
through the his/her body of work. As part of this discussion Schaeffer
asserts that since the ultimate reality of God is really truth itself,
the worldview projected by a piece of art is one of the standards by
which art may be judged (he identifies three others: technical excellence,
validity-honesty to one's self and worldview, and the integration of
content and vehicle).
Schaeffer's detailed examination of what art is, does, and how art does
what it does provides an extremely useful perspective from which to
view the subject. I highly recommend this book."

tough issues all artists in ministry face, such as:
• Servanthood vs. Stardom
• Excellence vs. Perfectionism
• Managing Your Emotions
• The Spiritual Disciplines of the Artist
Follow-up questions for group discussions and personal action steps
built into each chapter make this an excellent resource for small group
study.
An excellent book! A must for every Christian artist (in my opinion).

Ray is a musician and worshipper, and founder of Selah Ministries. He
teaches an in-depth course on minstrel worship at The Foundry in downtown
Nashville and is actively involved with the Provision ministry there.
He also serves on the MorningStar ministry team based in Charlotte,
NC. He travels with the intent to declare over entire cities and regions
the new sound of victory the Lord is raising up for these end times.
Through his teaching, preaching and prophesying, he aims to help restore
the prophetic and apostolic order of musicians and minstrels across
the land. His dream is to see the King of Kings high and lifted up,
inhabiting the worship of a people of truth that are submitted to and
dominated by the Spirit of the Living God.
Vision of Selah Ministries: Birthed from the hearts of worshippers
yearning to see the glory of God fill His temple, Selah Ministries was
established to further the releasing of musicians into their destiny
in God. By studying and researching the Word of God and its ever-present
connection to modern history as it relates to God's purpose for music
and musicians, we aim to sharpen the weapons of worshipping warriors
with tools of understanding. Our desire is to equip musicians with the
understanding of what usually comes most natural to them; to define
the core parts of who they are before God and their various callings
in Him. By ministering at conferences, schools, churches and holding
clinics, workshops and seminars, we hope to see a release of the fresh
prophetic word to musicians urging them further into His presence. Our
vision is for an army of musicians prepared as worshipping warriors
with an end-time anointing.

A Time To Sing. A Manual For The African Church
=============================================
A review by Sue Hall
King, Roberta R. 1999. A Time To Sing. A Manual For The African Church.
Evangel Publishing House: Nairobi, Kenya. 183p.
At last - a resource written with our African colleagues in mind. Dr.
King’s book aims to equip small groups wishing to meet to compose indigenous
heart-music Scripture songs with all that they need to:
form such a group,
seek the Lord in His word regarding music and heart worship,
analyse indigenous music styles and forms,
begin and continue writing new songs in a style felt to be their own,
and
make recordings.
The material is equally useful to outsider facilitators who might be
engaged in encouraging such activities – people such as pastors, missionaries,
ethnomusicologists, etc. King’s focus is resolutely Biblical, offering
great resources to all involved in a music ministry through clear Bible
studies and ideas for application into a local context. Particularly
helpful are her suggestions for appropriate song text Scriptures for
churches in different stages of formation and growth. Each section ends
with a challenge to the reader and those working with small composing
groups to pursue Bible studies and research on local music. A number
of tables showing how to make orderly comparisons of different themes
are included. The final index (including even the names of the composers
cited) and Scripture index are great helps in browsing the text for
specific elements. There is not a large bibliography, but key texts
(Chenoweth, Chernoff, Klem, Kraft, Merriam, Nettl, Nketia, Sogaard,
etc) are referenced and should be made available through SIL libraries.
Dr. King includes an extensive chapter on discovering song form, written
from the perspective of insiders discovering their own music. Examples
of the “call and response” song form, ranging from very simple to “high
text load” are given. The texts are given in an African language and
an English translation, along with a score in Western notation for some
of them. All that is lacking is a CD of the actual performances to serve
as examples to groups.
Throughout, graphic icons are used to flag up different suggestions,
technical definitions, tips and practical examples from King’s 22 years’
experience across the African continent. Her metaphors such as music
as soup requiring certain ingredients, or a song as a mango which grows
and ripens, could be applied in many settings. Her approach bears in
mind both the monolingual village location and the multi-lingual urban
context, encouraging believers to define what is their heart music before
beginning to compose. Perhaps the only criticism would be the amount
of preparation prior to composition that she suggests, although it is
understood that groups will be worshipping together from the beginning
using the musical resources that they already have available to them.
This book is a great resource for all those involved in facilitating
workshops or local composing groups, and would be a good tool to give
to local Scripture Use committees for continuation of the composition
process after an initial workshop. A translation into French would open
up the text to thousands more of our African brothers and sisters in
Christ who long to sing a new song to the Lord.

“…Let the nations sing.
What are the universal constants of Christian worship? What are the
unique elements that arise out of diverse local contexts? How do we
appropriately respect and honor both the constancy and the diversity?
In Diverse Worship Pedrito U. Maynard-Reid explores the multiethnic
dimensions of worship by looking at three specific cultural contexts--African-American,
Caribbean and Hispanic. After surveying worship and culture through
history, he devotes a section of his book to each of these three cultural
context for worship. Maynard-Reid colorfully describes and characterizes
each worship tradition, and he explores its historical development and

LET THE WHOLE WORLD SING: The Story Behind the Music of Lasaunne 11
- by Corean Bakke
- http://pdb2.yahoo.com/shop?d=b&id=2697878
==================================
...This book is an affirmation that our fellowship in Christ is not
dependent upon a forced unanimity of culture, language, musical styles
or modes of worship -- rather, that our fellowship springs from and
is dependent on the commonality of our salvation in Christ.....a remarkable
chronicle of Christian witness and music-making in a global, multi-language
and multi-cultural context......this book illustrates the hard work
that is necessary to enable the sharing of the liturgical gifts of God's
people across cultural and confessional lines; it also reveals the rewards
of such sharing...

MY TONGUE IS THE PEN: How Audiocassettes Can Serve the Non-Reading World
- Marilyn Malmstrom
=====================================
This book emphasizes the importance of the integration of audio activities
into the overall strategy of literacy and language development. It is
designed to meet the growing need for documentation on the why's and
how's of audiocassette usage.
In many language groups, the illiteracy
rates remain high, despite yers of literacy efforts. The challenge comes
in trying to find ways and methods to provide teaching and training
that will attract and build up a community while encouraging further
literacy. In recent years, the need to include traditional and modern
nonprint media has become more evident. More and more people are using
a variety of nonprint media forms with a great deal of success. MY TONGUE
IS THE PEN makes available the principles needed to successfully include
an appropriate audiocassette program in a language program strategy.
The presentation allows for the kind of flexibility needed to make the
audio element in a program effective in a given language community.

NOTE: There are also principles in this book which apply to the development
and utilization of various forms of media to reach the unreached through
music and the arts. There are millions of non-readers who may not ever
have the chance to become literate, but who are able to relate to an
appropriate presentation of the Gospel through music and the arts.

PEOPLE OF THE DRUM OF GOD – COME!
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Ethnography of a Speech Surrogate Performance Paradigm
-- by Paul Neeley, 1999, Dallas: SIL, 300 pages
Have you ever thought about how to gather your rural congregation if
you were in the African bush? This book details how one church leader
in Cameroon uses a hollow log "talking drum" to communicate to everyone
in the area, calling them to early morning prayer twice a week.
The drummed poem changes every week as the various parts of the discourse
are rearranged, repeated, or omitted according to the performer's discretion.
The drum calls, entreats, exhorts, even insults people (calling them
"little monkeys" and "a solitary bush pig") as the drumming of the church
catechist reminds the villagers to remember the vows
they made at baptism and to come to church now. The final stanza warns
people to think ahead to the day when they will die and see God face
to face to give account of their lives - and to therefore act accordingly
here on earth.
The book gives unprecedented insight into how the traditional art form
of a "talking drum" can be used in the service of the church, communicating
to people using a medium that is culturally relevant. The book is fairly
academic, using the same material as in the author's dissertation, but
all technical terms are explained. The analysis ranges from the connection
of spoken syllables to the drumstrokes, to the creation of lines and
stanzas at the discourse level, to the level of community comprehension.
This study draws from such diverse academic disciplines as sociolinguistics,
anthropology, semiotics, cognition, performance studies, phonology,
communication theory, discourse studies, aesthetics, and ethnomusicology
to paint a multifaceted picture of the "art of the talking drum" used
to gather Christians in rural Cameroon.
This book, a detailed example of an existing "ethnic art medium" now
used in a Christian context, is available from the author at ;
two 60-minute audio cassette tapes that contain the actual drumming
and accompany the book are also available.

(Editor's Note) -- Fawn has written this timely, much-needed and very
valuable book about the restoration of HONOR needed in the earth today
and especially among believers! Included are some excellent excerpts
below about honoring other cultures. The book includes helpful stories
and information on this topic. This book provides for you some of her
thoughts regarding honoring the artistic gifts that God has blessed
other cultures with and us through these cultures, all as various manifestations
of His character and glory! Fawn’s message in the book and in the chapter
excerpted below are very much needed especially as believers around
the world seek to live out the roles God has given them in seeing the
Great Commission accomplished. I would highly recommend this book to
you!
Another helpful book to assist those who are also seeking to encourage
international believers in multicultural churches, for example.

THE SOUND OF THE HARVEST - Music's Mission In Church and Culture - J.
Nathan Corbitt.
==========================================================
Martin Luther, noting music's role in worship, once commented that "he
who sings prays twice." Serving as a vital complement to preaching and
teaching - and, in a sense, preaching and teaching through its own medium
- music has helped to characterize Christian denominations and spread
the gospel to the far corners of the globe. Presenting an integrative
blend of music, communications, and missions theory, THE SOUND OF THE
HARVEST examines music's role in the church and culture today, and also
present a multicultural outlook on this art form.
Nathan Corbitt is professor of communications and music at Eastern College
(USA), spent eleven years working in Africa in cross-cultural communications
and music.
