CONTENTS
In order for those of us who sense God moving us in the directions of rediscovering our biblical New Testament Christianity roots, and as we seek the direction of the Holy Spirit in leading us further in the future as He leads us on into maturity, we need to understand what the biblical understanding of the CHURCH is.
In this piece we will look at several aspects which will hopefully help to give us some understanding in this regard. This is far from a comprehensive study!
Over the past generations, the word 'church' has tended to lose most of it's original intent and meaning...
Modern 'church' has become the name of a building or the place where we go...rather than the name of the 'people of God' - who we ARE.
In operation, 'church' has generally been functioning more and more as a business, rather than the Church functioning as a FAMILY. For example, we go to 'business meetings', and growing numbers of pastors are now being given title of 'CEO' of their 'churches', rather than being 'fathers' to God's Family.

church [probably Gr.,=divine], aggregation of Christian believers. The traditional belief has the church the community of believers, living and dead, headed by Jesus, who founded it in the apostles. This is the doctrine of the mystical body of Christ (Eph. 1.2223). Some divisions speak of the church militant (the living), the church suffering (the dead in purgatory), and the church triumphant (the saints of heaven). The church is said to be recognizable by four marks (as in the Nicene Creed): it is one (united), holy (producing holy lives), catholic (universal, supranational), and apostolic (having continuity with the apostles). In the Orthodox Eastern Church, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Church of England, crucial importance is attached to the unbroken tradition, as handed down through the Holy Ghost (see apostolic succession); with this doctrine goes the apostolic power to administer grace through the sacraments. Certain men of the Reformation rejected the doctrine of apostolic succession and substituted for the authority of the church the authority of Scripture alone. Protestants generally interpret the oneness of the church in a mystical sense; the true church is held to be invisibly present in all Christian denominations. The ecumenical movement in recent years has stimulated fresh study on the doctrine of the church.

The earliest churches date from the late 3d cent.; before then Christians, because of persecutions, worshiped secretly, especially in private houses. In Rome and some other cities Christians worshiped at the martyrs' tombs in the underground cemeteries, or catacombs. The catacomb chapel influenced the furnishing of churches, particularly the crypt. The basilica form came to be standard in Western Europe, while in the East the norm became the square church of Byzantine architecture (see Byzantine art and architecture), derived from the shape of the Greek cross. The interior of the Eastern church is characterized by an image screen (iconostasis) rendering the sanctuary invisible to the lay worshipers, except that the altar may be seen through the doors of the screen. In the West, modifications of the basilica were developed in Romanesque architecture and in Gothic architecture. Renaissance and baroque architecture produced innovations in ecclesiastical design. Western churches in general have an east-west orientation with the altar at the eastern end. call"), was used among the Greeks of a body of citizens "gathered"
to discuss the affairs of state, Acts 19:39. In the Sept. it is used to designate
the "gathering" of Israel, summoned for any definite purpose, or
a "gathering" regarded as representative of the whole nation. In
Acts 7:38 it is used of Israel; in 19:32,41, of a riotous mob. It has two
applications to companies of Christians, (a) to the whole company of the redeemed
throughout the present era, the company of which Christ said, "I will
build My Church," Matt. 16:18, and which is further described as "the
Church which is His Body," Eph. 1:22; 5:23, (b) in the singular number
(e.g., Matt. 18:17, RV marg., "congregation"), to a company consisting
of professed believers, e.g., Acts 20:28; 1 Cor. 1:2; Gal. 1:13; 1 Thess.
1:1; 2 Thess. 1:1; 1 Tim. 3:5, and in the plural, with reference to churches
in a district.
There is an apparent exception in the RV of Acts 9:31, where, while the AV
has "churches," the singular seems to point to a district; but the
reference is clearly to the church as it was in Jerusalem, from which it had
just been scattered, Acts 8:1. Again, in Rom. 16:23, that Gaius was the host
of "the whole church," simply suggests that the "assembly"
in Corinth had been accustomed to meet in his house, where also Paul was entertained.

BELOVED OF
THE LORD - Deut 33:12 - "Let the
beloved of the LORD rest secure in him,
for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between
his shoulders." Jer 31: 3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, [a] saying:
"I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.
17 The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great
delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you
with singing."
GRAFTED IN - Romans 11:17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, Romans 11:19 You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in." Romans 11:23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. Romans 11:24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

Colossians 1:24 [ Paul's Labor for the Church ] Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.
Acts 2:37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" 38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far offfor all whom the Lord our God will call." 40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
The Fellowship of the Believers
42They devoted themselves to the apostles'
teaching and to the fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
43Everyone was filled with awe, and
many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44All
the believers were together and had everything in common.
45Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to
anyone as he had need. 46Every day they continued
to meet together in the temple courts. They broke
bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising
God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord
added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 4: 32All the believers were
one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was
his own, but they shared everything they had.
33With great power the apostles continued to testify
to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.
34There were no needy persons among them. For
from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money
from the sales 35and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed
to anyone as he had need.
36Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means
Son of Encouragement), 37sold a field he owned and brought the money and put
it at the apostles' feet.
Notice the order/context of the following: talks about the spiritual gifts, how they are a part of the Body and of seeing it built up, that LOVE is crucial in seeing this happen and in seeing the Body grow in a healthy way, and more about the gifts and aspects of their worship/fellowship times together.
1 Corinthians 12
Spiritual Gifts
1Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2You
know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led
astray to mute idols. 3Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by
the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus
is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.
4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are different
kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6There are different kinds of working,
but the same God works all of them in all men.
7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
12The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit into one bodywhether Jews or Greeks, slave or freeand we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" 22On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
27Now you are the body of Christ,
and each one of you is a part of it. 28And in
the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third
teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those
able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking
in different kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all
teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak
in tongues[d]? Do all interpret? 31But eagerly desire[e]
the greater gifts.
And now I will show you the most excellent way.
1 Corinthians 13
Love
1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am
only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy
and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that
can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess
to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain
nothing. 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily
angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but
rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes,
always perseveres.
8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 1413For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 16If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand[e] say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.
18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to
evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21In the Law it is written:
"Through men of strange tongues
and through the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
but even then they will not listen to me,"[f] says the Lord.
22Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand[g] or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand[h]comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, 25and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!"
Orderly Worship
26What then shall we say, brothers? When you
come together, everyone has a hymn,
or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All
of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. 27If
anyone speaks in a tongue, twoor at the most threeshould speak,
one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28If there is no interpreter, the
speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
29Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully
what is said. 30And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down,
the first speaker should stop. 31For you can all prophesy in turn so that
everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32The spirits of prophets are subject
to the control of prophets. 33For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.
As in all the congregations of the saints, 34women should remain silent in
the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as
the Law says. 35If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their
own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

36Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. 38If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored.[i]
39Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
Heb 10:24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one anotherand all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Unfortunately, the verse above is often used to try to coerce people to go 'to church' and sit in pews, rather than the intent, here, which is to meet (fellowship!!) together (ie. where 2 or 3 are gathered in HIS NAME) and ENCOURAGE each other, which tends not to have much opportunity in traditional services as compared to the vast opportunities in house/simple church fellowship. And, this fellowship/encourgement is to happen ALL THE MORE as we see the Day (of the Lord) approaching! It is much easier to see that happen in house/emerging churches than it is to coordinate this in a traditional church.
Ephesians 4
4There is one body and one Spiritjust
as you were called to one hope when you were called 5one Lord, one faith,
one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and
in all. 7But to each one of us grace has been given as
Christ apportioned it. 8This is why it[a] says: "When he ascended
on high, he led captives in his train
and gave gifts to men."[b] 9(What does "he ascended" mean except
that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions[c]? 10He who descended
is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill
the whole universe.) 11It was he who gave some to be
apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors
and teachers, 12to prepare God's
people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
13until we all reach unity in the faith
and in the knowledge of the Son of God and
become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
1 John 1:6,7 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[b] sin.
I John 2:3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
Ephesians 3
16I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledgethat you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Philippians 2:1 (NIV) If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
1 Corinthians 3:11
For no one can lay any foundation other than the one
already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
HE is the Cornerstone - the True Foundation - for what??
19Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens,
but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, 20built
on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
21In him the whole building is joined together
and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22And in
him you too are being built together
to become a
dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
Romans 15:20 It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation
1 Corinthians 3:10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building
1 Timothy 3:15 if I am delayed, you will know how people
ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the
living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
Hebrews 11:10 For he was looking forward to the city with
foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Revelation 21:14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations,
and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
WHO IS THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH?
Ephesians 1:22 And God placed all things under his feet
and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, Ephesians 5:23
for the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is
the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Colossians
1:18
And he is the head of the body, the church; he
is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything
he might have the supremacy.
To be REFLECTOR'S OF GOD'S GLORY - 18And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect[a] the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Col 1: 19, 20 19For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Ephesians 3:10
10His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.
HOW IS THIS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED?
By preaching and demonstrating the GOOD NEWS OFTHE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM! An Introduction to the Kingdom of God, which is the larger context for Discipling the Nations, which in itself is the larger context of CHURCH PLANTING, which is the larger context of invididuals/households becoming disciples of Jesus.
All of this is brought about through FREEDOM IN CHRIST, as we are set free from the lies and deception of the enemy! - It is the TRUTH THAT SETS US FREE!!
Gal 5:1 1It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
I John 1:6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.
In order to get free, we need to follow the example of the Bereans and EXAMINE the Scriptures for OURSELVES and not just accept what we are being taught by others without checking things out.
Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
We can be assured that Jesus, our Teacher and Wonderful Counsellor, and the Holy Spirit, will teach us, as we remain in HIM and keep in fellowship with His disciples.
I John 2:26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeitjust as it has taught you, remain in him.
John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he
will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak
only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come..."
APOSTOLIC TRADITION VS RELIGIOUS/HUMAN TRADITION
There is a big difference between apostolic tradition, which we as the Church ARE to follow, and religious or human tradition!!
APOSTOLIC
1 Corinthians 11:2 [ Propriety in Worship ] I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, [ Or traditions] just as I passed them on to you.
2 Thessalonians 2:15 So then, brothers, stand firm and
hold to the teachings [ Or traditions] we passed on to you, whether by word
of mouth or by letter.
2 Thessalonians 3:6 [ Warning Against Idleness ] In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching [ Or tradition ] you received from us.
Philippians 4:9Whatever you have learned or received or
heard from me, or seen in meput it into practice. And the God of peace
will be with you.
RELIGIOUS
Galatians 1:14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews
of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
Matth 15:1Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law
came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2"Why do your disciples break
the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!"
3Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake
of your tradition? 4For God said, 'Honor your father and mother'[a] and 'Anyone
who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'[b] 5But you say that
if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise
have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' 6he is not to 'honor his
father[c]' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your
tradition. 7You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8" 'These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9They worship me in vain;
their teachings are but rules taught by men.'[d]"
Mark 7:8 You have let go of the commands of God and are
holding on to the traditions of men." Mark
7:9 And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands
of God in order to observe [ Some manuscripts set up] your own traditions!
Mark 7:13
Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down.
And you do many things like that."
HUMAN
Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather t than on Christ.
Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will ishis good, pleasing and perfect will.
