Music of the Heart: Howard Thurman's Legacy
Jesus and the Disinherited - Howard Thurman
"Jesus and the Disinherited, by Howard Thurman. This book is considered a "must-read" by many engaged in social justice issues over the years. Dr. Thurman was born at the turn of the 20th century in the deep South, and was formed as a black man there. Later he was Dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University, founder of one of the earliest integrated churches, a mystic who preached and wrote prolifically, and an adviser to many of the leaders in the Civil Rights movement, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jesus and the Disinherited, a short, 100-page book, is compelling in its analysis of the lives of the disinherited -- all those of us who feel our "back is against the wall." Using the experience of African Americans in the U.S. in the 1940s, Thurman names the ways we fear, fall into deception and hate others, and shows how the teachings and power of Jesus, a poor, disinherited man himself, enable us to overcome these and love." - from Here

HAVE A HEART FOR THE HOMELESS
Pat Nisbet writes;
Have a Heart for the Homelessis a fundraiser, awareness concert we are holding at St. Patricks Church at Main and 12th Ave. on Saturday, March 12th at 7:00 pm. This concert is interdenominational and is being held to help raise funds and awareness on the plight of the poor and homeless in our city.
This is the second year we will be holding this concert. Last years concert was held at Shaughnessy Heights United Church and the following churches were involved and will be again. (First United, First Baptist, Holy Rosary, Guardian Angels, 10th Ave. Alliance, Central Presbyterian, Kitsilano Christian Community, Fairview Baptist Church, Trinity Baptist, West Point Grey Baptist, Granville Chapel, St. James Anglican, St. Helens Anglican, South Fraser Vineyard, St. Johns United, Congregation of Beth Israel, Unitarian Church, Shaughnessy Heights United)
We managed to raise $800.00 for each of 8 different charities that are working
with the homeless - namely St. James Society, First United, Catholic Charities
Mens Hostel, Sisters of Atonement, Door is Open, Central Presbyterian's Breakfast
programme, First Baptist's and Grandview Calvary Baptists Shelter Programmes.
We also will be adding 10th Ave. Alliance's Shelter Programme which just started
this year. The concert will be family oriented and will only go for one and
a half hours with no intermission. After the concert we will hold a reception
in the hall (with donations from bakeries etc.) and a small silent auction
of local artists. The admission will be kept low $12.00 for pre-buying and
$15.00 at the door.

Maria - song by Jeannette
Petkau
Lyrics: Chris Janz, Jeannette Petkau Music: Chris Janz
In the night, alone and afraid
She walks the street plying her trade
Wondering, where she went wrong
She walks the street, praying for dawn
In the night, lost and confused
All her life, broken and bruised
Wondering, if things will ever change
She hears a voice, calling her name
CHORUS:
Come to Me, I am the One
Who makes your nights, bright like the sun
Come to me, I am the love your cryin' for
Like desert for rain ~ In my arms, You'll find a way
I'm the one, calling your name
Maria, Maria
A frightened girl, 14 years old
A frightened girl, out in the cold
All she knows, is the heartache and tears
What a tragedy for 14 years
A frightened girl, with nowhere to go
Now the street is what she calls home
In her heart, desperately praying
Maria, can't you hear Him saying
CHORUS:

Maria (Repeat)
