NEPAL:
A SONGBOOK UNITES BELIEVERS NATIONWIDE:
Just a few short years ago there were only a handful of believers in this
Hindu nation. One of the incredible chapters of modern missions history is
the way the Lord has swept through Nepal bringing thousands upon thousands
into the kingdom of God. As churches were planted they needed a means to worship.
To help fill this need the Lord united a team of local Christians and missionaries
to attempt an awesome project-putting together a Nepali songbook. The result
is a resource of 593 hymns and choruses, called Kristiya Bhajan. Audio recordings
from known composers were collected. The music, chords, and Nepali text were
input into a state-of-the-art computer notation software program.
The editing and re-editing was very tedious. "What's the status of hymn
346? Verse 2 has too many lines to fit the music. What do we do? What about
# 91? We haven't been able to identify the composer and we have five different
versions of the tune on tape. What do we do?
The final laser printing was a true test of faith due to printer incompatibility,
which required the machines not be turned off. This was nearly impossible
during frequent unplanned electricity cuts. As a result the music printing
went on non-stop for 21 hours, and the completed final printout happened literally
one minute before the next power outage!
Commented the compilers: "The music edition will be useful for standardizing
the way songs are sung, as well as providing a valuable tool for teaching
and uplifting the spirit of worship throughout Nepal and in Nepali communities
around the world."

TELEGU LANGUAGE HYMNAL:
There is a Telegu language hymnal available which includes some indigenous
hymns. However, the hymnal only has the words so far. According to the Pastor
(in India)., all of the melodies for the songs are already well known by the
people in the congregations. Thus, there is no need for notes. Also, the cost
of the hymnal would be greater if musical notes were added. When Alvar Helmes
visitsed the church in India in 1998, drums were used to accompany the singing
of the hymns. All of the hymns were memorized until this hymnal was printed.
Several churches had keyboards, but the melodies they played on them were
very, very simple since the players did not have any musical background. Perhaps
there are some of you that might be able to help them get music written for
these songs, as well? And perhaps one of your churches would be interested
in helping to fund the new hymnals which could also include the musical score?
Hymnals are free of charge but they would ask that postage expenses be covered.
Please contact Alvar Helmes to order: 27307 NE 85th Ct., Battle Ground, WA 98604 Fax: 360-666-6861 Email: ironbelt@integrityonline.com

TURKMENISTAN:
SONGBOOK HELPS UNITE THE BELIEVERS:
This Central Asian nation is just emerging with believers forming into the
several small fellowships. A landmark event resulted with the release of the
first ever Turkmen songbook a few years ago. Now churches and mission representatives
in the area have united to re-edit the songbook. Plans are in place to record
the songs as well. The distribution of the song materials in places like Turkmenistan
provide a means to unite and give a common identity to the scattered groups
of believers there.
(As reported by a missionary working in the area).
