Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits
According to Proactive Tax Consulting: "Many disabled taxpayers are not claiming tax credits that are available to them. The attendant care expense is an expense that a disabled taxpayer can deduct from earned income. These reflect amounts paid to an attendant on the taxpayer's behalf allowing the tax payer to work.
Disabled taxpaers may be eligible for an additional personal tax credit of $4,293 if they have a severe and prolonger mental or physical impairment. This credit is little known and little used.
Both of these tax benefits are avilable when the taxpayer gets a form T2201 signed by an attending physician. This form declares that you have and are markedly restricted in your activities of daily living by your disability."

They have a free medical and emergency wallet card that you can complete online
with both medical and emergency contact information, then you just print it
and fold it in two and get it laminated. You keep it with your driver's licence.
I put everything on my card, including details of who to contact about the
dogs, funeral wishes, etc.
It is good because, if you were in an accident, they have your doctor's name
and all drug details right there in your wallet. They always check your purse
for i.d./driver's licence first, but it could take them hours or days to get
your medical records.
You can create, print out, and laminate and go back to the website and up
date as often as needed.

Independent Living BC (ILBC) - A housing for health partnership designed to meet the needs of seniors and people with disabilities who require some personal assistance, but who do not need 24-hour facility care. By 2006/07, 3,500 units will have been created under the ILBC program...Seniors with lower incomes and people with disabilities are able to rent the ILBC units for 70 per cent of their after-tax income. This covers their accommodation, meals, personal care and hospitality services, such as housekeeping, laundry, recreational opportunities and 24-hour response system. BC Housing provides housing subsidies to those who qualify for the Independent Living BC program and the health authorities fund the personal care services.

Subsidized
Housing Units - Both the federal and provincial governments provide funding
for subsidized housing. This includes all types of housing in which the provincial
government provides some type of subsidy or rent assistance.
Tenant
Handbook
Provides current tenants with a better understanding of the approach and policies
that BC Housing follows in an attempt to make their homes a safe, affordable
and comfortable place to live. The handbook covers a range of topics: moving
in, keys, pets, guests, moving out, and paying the rent. It also includes
basic safety information, what to do if you have a complaint, and a section
on your rights
Understanding Wait-Lists
Ask your doctor to send in a requisition for you for in-home care workers. If you qualify, this is a gov't-funded service. You can get someone to come assist you in your home for about an hour per day.
They can assist you with such things as putting together and serving you your meals, doing dishes for you, sweeping the floor, cleaning the bathroom, giving back rubs, helping with bathing and other personal care, putting lotion on you, help with your pills, opening jars and cans, some light cleaning, taking out the garbage, etc.
They cannot cut your nails or administer prescriptions or prescription creams, etc.
Comcare has a contract with the local Health Unit - which is covered by the gov't. However, for long term care, it is not covered, and for extra services you can contact them and hire them to do that for you.

MUSIC CREATED FOR DOWNES SYNDROME PEOPLE
HARPEGGIO - this beautiful-sounding harp, which is similar to an auto-harp but is played like a harp instead of pressing down buttons and strumming like an auto-harp, was designed for the inventor's Downes Syndrome child. The musical notation was also created especially for this child, and is so easy to follow that anyone can 'learn' to play the Harpeggio the FIRST TIME THEY TRY! Anyone that enjoys beautiful music but doesn't have time to spend years learning an instrument can make beautiful music in a very short time with the Harpeggio!

Two options - carried by many pharmacists
1) Blisterpacks - filled as a free weekly service by your pharmacist - you sign a consent form. This packet has various bubblepack slots for various times of every day of the week. You just pop out your pills as needed.
The other option is for you to get one of the Reminder packs - available in various sizes - from the pharmacy and fill it yourself. They will cost you about $5-$10.
