Reel Light's February meeting will be held on Monday, February 9th at "the loft" in the City Reach Warehouse. Our guest speaker is Molly Lyons (see bio and headshot below), a Seattle-based actor/director who runs Green Wood Studio (www.greenwoodstudio.org). She will be in Vancouver this Spring to direct a production of The Glass Menagerie starring Reel Lighters Ian Farthing and Jade Shaw at Pacific Theatre February 19 - March 13.
Molly's topic is entitled "Hardening of the heart - killer for artists." She will talk about staying open to the creative spirit when surrounded by discouragement or oppression (avoiding burnout and hardening of the heart). Infamous singer/songwriter Graham Ord will be on hand leading us in some worship songs. Reel Lighter Steve Plitt will screen and talk about his recently shot short film THE TICKET. Various Valentines goodies (like those multi-coloured heart shaped candies that say things like "Be Mine"), coffee and tea will be available for your munching, mixing and mingling pleasure.

Molly Lyons' Biography
-------------------------------:
Molly Lyons began her career at a young age, studying dance & acting as
a child and getting her first professional touring job at 15 with Peninsula
Reader's Theatre in California. She received an acting scholarship to Santa
Clara University, one of the top undergraduate theatre training programs in
the country, and worked in their semi-professional summer stock company in
between academic years. Minoring in Art History, Molly studied the classics
in Europe: Florence, Vienna, London, Athens and Ireland.
Molly was a national finalist in the University/Resident Theatre Auditions and there received an acting scholarship for graduate studies to California Institute of the Arts in southern California where she continued intensive training with some of America's finest instructors and received her Masters of Fine Arts.
Throughout her career, Molly has consistently pursued advanced and specialized training, which includes some of the finest institutes, teachers and companies in the US, Europe & UK: Libby Appel of Ashland, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Robert Benedetti of The Actor At Work (now a film producer), Patrick Stewart, Julian Curry & Paul Whitworth of the Royal Shakespeare Co.; Cate Fitzmaurice of La Jolla Playhouse; Susan Cox of the Shaw Festival & Vancouver Playhouse; Kimberly White & Jonny Epstein of Shakespeare & Co.; The London Shakespeare Workout.
Molly has performed in regional repertory theatres up and down the west coast and was once fortunate enough to appear at the Kennedy Center. She has also done film, TV, industrials and voice-over work.
After more than 15 years in the business, Molly took a hiatus from acting
and began focusing more on her teaching, directing & writing, working
in the U.S. and Canada. Five years into that acting hiatus, Molly went independent
and opened the Green Wood Studio, where she not only teaches but studies with
her colleagues and distinguished guest artists (Steven Anderson, Gary
Austin, Jonny Epstein, Carol Fox Prescott, Michael Gellman, Rob O'Neill, Edward
Strauss, Jeffrey Sweet). Molly teaches her national workshops in Chicago,
LA, NY, Seattle and internationally in Vancouver BC & Ireland. In the
summers of 2002-03, Molly was invited by the prestigious New York University
to teach Classical Scenes & Monologues for a new program in Paris.
Green Wood Studio has a wing, Excelsior! Stage, which is dedicated to developing new works. Several of the shows developed on the Excelsior! Stage have been directed or produced by Molly Lyons and they have gone onto other theatres, festivals and tours.
Ms. Lyons has now returned to the stage, having written her own one-woman
show, based on the life of 16th century Irish queen and sea captain, Grace
O'Malley, called A Most Notorious Woman. After developing the show on the
Excelsior! Stage of the Green Wood Studio, she has performed it as a works-in-progress
in festivals from Seattle to NY, including the full-length version for the
Irish Festival at the Seattle Center. Molly celebrated the world premiere
of the play at Bas Bleu Theatre Co., Ft. Collins, CO, in October of 2000 to
rave reviews. She and
composer/musician for the show, Martin Stillion, toured the show in Ireland
during October, 2001. The Canadian premiere of the show was at Pacific Theatre
in January of 2002. Molly & Martin have had an invitation from the O'Malley
family chieftain to return to Ireland in June of 2003, a command performance
with clan members from around the world, at the notorious O'Malley Rally.

MUSIC & ARTS BUSINESSES IN THE MARKETPLACE
#######################################
(Editor's Note) - do you desire to use your music/arts business to glorify
God in the marketplace? Here is some potential local and international support
for you by a network that is committed to seeing the Kingdom of God advancing
through business, etc. ICCC is an international network and are definitely
a network for you to be aware of!

INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE - Canada (Vancouver)

Vision:
They said to me, "Those who survived the exile and are back in the province
are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and
its gates have been burned with fire." - Nehemiah 1:3
"...Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer
be in disgrace."
- Nehemiah 2:17
As in Nehemiah's time, we believe the heart of our LORD is saying to the Canadian marketplace of business and professional people, government personnel, and educators, "Come stand up in unity, love, and my calling and start rebuilding the spiritual foundation of Canada, so you are no longer in disgrace."
As our country was founded on Him (our Lord Jesus Christ) having dominion from Sea to Sea (Psalm 72:8), come let us seek His call and purpose in the Marketplace of Canada.
ICCC represents a serious and challenging call to the Christian Business World to recognize the times we have entered into and in the light of that recognition, to come into a new dimension of faith available to those who "fear the Lord... speak to one another... and meditate on His Name." (Malachi 3:16)
The vision calls for a world-wide network of committed men & women in business communicating with one other, exchanging ideas, products and services; helping sustain and strengthen each other materially and spiritually; and by the very existence of the vision, proclaiming the rightful authority of Christ to the world at large.
At the heart of the vision of ICCC is God's desire to extend his loving
rule, through his church, into the market places of the world. This requires
business people who seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness

Image X Media was officially founded in the summer of 2000 by a bunch
of people passionate about the idea of developing relevant tools for youth
evangelism. Glenn and Blair had already been experimenting with media ideas
dating back to the early 90's. However, when they came across a crazy Brit
named Phil, the ideas soon became possible. Partnered with some generous funding
the vision quickly became reality. From that point, Image X Media has grown
exponentially in vision and means. It's become clear that this isn't going
to be a short-term project

THE PASSION - to be released in March 2004
Some very encouraging reports!

USING THE PASSION FILM - AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
An opportunity like Mel Gibson's PASSION film comes only rarely. Here is a high-profile mainstream movie release, not directly produced by a 'Christian' company, with the credibility of Mel's name. The controversy it has already stirred up will do it no harm at all. With a release date in February in US (and presumably later elsewhere), now is the time for both web evangelists and churches to plan an integrated approach to this unique opportunity.
The Canada-based TruthMedia team have built an evangelistic site around
Mel Gibson's PASSION film. http://www.thelife.com/
And they have created SHARE THE LIFE as a site directed at Christians, encouraging
them to use this amazing opportunity: http://www.sharethelife.com/
Note that both these sites are incomplete at the time of writing, but will
be fully operational mid-February, well before the main film launch.
CCCI US have rebranded their WHO IS JESUS site as 'PASSION OF CHRIST': http://www.passionofchrist.com/
And CCC's Evangelism Toolbox has created specific PASSION-related where
you can find (or add), specific resources for churches to mesh with this very
significant film.
http://www.thepassiontoolbox.org/
For details of ordering tickets, getting the film to your local cinema,
and obtaining promotional materials from the films makers, plus links, news,
reviews, and comments:

START MOVING
The potential to integrate both church and online evangelism with this film
is enormous. Church and evangelistic websites can use links to materials featured
here. Church programs can be built around this film in many ways. Check out
SharetheLife and PassionToolbox, and be envisioned by hearing what others
are planning.
THE CANADIAN SITES IN DETAIL
TruthMedia in Canada write:
"The Passion of the Christ represents an evangelistic opportunity that
is unlikely to be repeated in our lifetime. Across the country churches and
parachurch organizations are working together to maximize the impact this
film will have on the public. Campus Crusade for Christ, Canada is developing
two websites to meet the needs of people who have seen the film and have questions
and churches that want to seize this opportunity for evangelism.
http://www.thelife.com - A website for people who have seen the film and have questions.
After seeing the movie, thelife.com is an opportunity for people to explore the Passion of Christ. Feature articles on the site will deal with common questions people have after seeing the movie. Through articles, video clips, discussion boards and a chatroom visitors will have the chance to dig deeper into the life of Christ. There will also be the opportunity to sign-up for a 10 day email journey that will take them through a discussion of the film, scripture and what Christ's sacrifice means for them.
In early screenings of the film there has been an eerie hush when the final credits roll. This movie moves people. When people have an emotional experience of this depth, they want to talk about it. We're building thelife.com to let them do exactly that. Laced throughout the site will be opportunities for people to email us their questions and prayer requests. Everything on the site will point to who Jesus is and why He was willing to suffer to greatly, and so graphically, for each of us. http://www.sharethelife.com - Equipping Christians to seize this opportunity for evangelism.
We've developed sharethelife.com to equip Christians to get involved in evangelism surrounding the film. Without prayer any evangelistic effort will be fruitless so one of the main focuses of sharethelife.com will be gathering and equipping Christians to pray for the film and the people who will see it. Onsite visitors can receive updated prayer requests, sign-up to be part of a 24-hour prayer chain and find information on starting a chain in their own church.
People who see The Passion of the Christ are going to have a lot of questions. Sharethelife.com will give Christians the opportunity to have a personal ministry through email mentoring. The site will train Christians in how to respond to questions that are sent in from the evangelistic site. We'll teach you what to do when you don't know the answer and provide practical, seeker-sensitive ways to include the gospel in every response. The site also contains resources and ideas for planning a church outreach, links to participating groups like Alpha and Outreach and evangelistic booklets that have been developed using images from the film.
Review on "The Passion of Christ" film
This letter is supposedly written by the daughter of James Dobson of Focus
on the Family. It was written after a private screening she and her father
had of "The Passion", Mel Gibson's upcoming movie about Christ's
final hours. (The authenticity of the letter has not been confirmed by this
Editor. However, its existence is confirmed by Focus on the Family. The content
of the letter seems consistent with that expressed by the Focus of the Family
leaders).
Dear Friends:
A couple months ago, I had the unique privilege of accompanying my family
to Mel Gibson's studio to see a private screening of his film, The Passion.
Many of you have probably heard about this portrayal of the last12 hours in
the earthly life of Jesus Christ. I can say that The Passion is the most beautiful,
profound, accurate, disturbing, realistic, and bloody depiction of this story
that I have ever seen. It is truly amazing, and it left all of us speechless
for a few minutes when it was over. Mr. Gibson entered the room during the
last ten minutes of the screening, and stayed for an hour to discuss the content
and to answer questions. He's hoping that my dad and Focus on the Family will
help promote it, and my dad has (without question!) agreed to do so. Mr. Gibson
expressed a concern about his position in the entertainment industry, and
said that this film will affect his status from here on.
When asked why he made the movie, he said that he had no choice in the matter
-- he felt called to the assignment, and he was determined to carry it out.
Questions had been raised as to whether he can find a distributor. Asked about
it at the screening, Mr. Gibson said confidently, "Oh, I'll find a distributor!"
The Passion should not be labeled a religious film, or something to be shown
only in churches. Compared with examples of recent Christian films, like Left
Behind, The Passion is a work of high art and great storytelling. The rough
cut I saw contained graphic scenes, including the seemingly endless scourging
of Jesus. The crucifixion scene is long, bloody and painful to watch. It's
very disturbing, but it's also moving at the same time. While I was taking
all of this in, I was thinking, "Christ did this for ME, and he would
have gone through it if I was the only one in all the world, and the same
goes for each person who has ever lived!"
To those in the Jewish community who worry that the film, which is scheduled
for release next Easter season ('04), might contain anti-Semitic elements,
or encourage people to persecute Jews, fear not. The film does not indict
Jews for the death of Jesus. It is faithful to the New Testament account.
Also, Mr. Gibson, a devout Roman Catholic, does not elevate Mary beyond what
Scripture says of her, which will broaden the film's appeal to Protestants.
The dialogue is in Aramaic and Latin. English subtitles are provided, and
they are very helpful in following the story line. A decision about using
them in the final version has not been made. My family and I tried to persuade
Mr. Gibson to leave the subtitles in, and my dad pointed out that those who
are unbelievers (or those who are weak in their understanding) will have no
idea of what's going on in the flashback scenes of Jesus' life without subtitles.
In The Passion, few liberties are taken with the Gospel account, and the extra
dialogue added helps round out the characters without damaging historical
or Biblical accuracy. Satan is cleverly played as an asexual being who at
first seems to be an observer in the Garden of Gethsemane (and other scenes),
but then becomes a snake slithering between the character's feet and attempting
to wrap itself around the arm of the prostrate and praying Jesus. The film
is an intense two hours. It uses unknown actors, which keeps the focus on
the message. By the end of the film (a unique portrayal of the Resurrection),
the viewer is exhausted! Thirteen years ago, actor Mickey Rooney wrote an
editorial for Variety in which he said, "The onscreen depiction of religion
is less than flattering, and, as a Christian, I pray the era of denigrating
religion on screen comes to a screeching halt. And soon."
His prayer has been answered in The Passion. It is a soul-stirring film that
deserves wide distribution and viewing. Its message is not just for Christians,
but for everyone. I hope you all will support Mel Gibson's bold and courageous
effort to portray the sacrifice that our Lord made for us. Pass this email
on, if you feel led, and be sure to see The Passion when it comes out. Yes,
it is a disturbing film, but every person should see this realistic depiction
of what Christ did for them! Danae Dobson

Scripture SONGS to Download and Memorize
re the
'40 DAYS OF PURPOSE" by Rick Warren
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
From an informal email from Jason Strain, Worship Leader, Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Surrey, BC - Email
"..I've just finished recording a CD of six songs I've written. Cedar Grove is going through Rick Warren's "40 Days of Purpose" program, and we are memorizing one Scripture verse per week. So the six songs are memory-verse songs, specifically created as tools to help our folks memorize their verses for each week
If there are people out there who are doing the '40 Days', and they are interested in having the songs, I'd be happy to just give these songs away, no charge.
I've made them available for downloading at: http://www.thingsthatgo.ca/mathews/. There's no copyright on these songs. I just want to bless the Body with this project. So please go ahead and put the word out there that people can download them for free. Just so you know, the songs go against some pretty common songwriting rules. They are extremely simple and overly repetitive. They contain no closure, and they fade out! I know that drives some people nuts, but I've done it that way intentionally. I want to make it difficult to get the song out of one's head! The point of course is Scripture memorization "

Please feel free to forward to others that you think would be interested in
subscribing to this free weekly/bi-weekly "Christianity & The Arts"
e-resources list.
To subscribe, email: GCWAC@DiscipleTheNations.org and put 'FREE Christianity & The Arts' Resources in the subject line. Thank you!
For the Jun 15/03 7 - January 15, 2004 editions, please request at same email address.
Please send me relevant information which you think should be included. This is mostly for folks in the Lower Mainland in BC so events will mostly reflect what's happening in this region, but others are welcome to receiving it as well, however we may not necessarily promote events in other regions (at least not at this point).
Many blessings!!
